I hope not. My dad died in 2014 and I don't want to have to tell him how farked the world became after he died.

Never. They're dead. You might be able to fake it though.

"I told you not to marry that slut, but did you listen? No, you went ahead, because you were in "love". Now that she's banging all your friends while you're at work, NOW do you realize I was right?"

Yeah, I think I'll pass...

I dunno, subby. It all depends on how fast you can get them into the quick-pack, and then it's just a matter of tuning into the right frequency. Gotta know what Louis Sarapis intends to do about the coming presidential election.

/now we just need a good Jim-Jam Briskin

I'm not sure I see the point to the photo thing. Maybe reading further into the article will shine some light.

The MyHeritage website does require users to sign up before they can use Deep Nostalgia.

Well, there's a glimmer of illumination. Let's click.

Okay, I see. Nope. If I want some kind of shiny digital bauble, I'd rather just PayPal you five dollars for it and call it even.

Or, and hear me out, we as people work on the personal issue that people do die.

They will die.  Everyone's existence is temporary.  Cherish your times together.  Treat them well while we're here.  Mourn them when they are gone.  We will all die.  We will all eventually be forgotten.  This is okay.

My grandma has been gone for thirty years.  Pretty much the last thing I want to hear is this conversation...

"What happened to you and why did you waste your life?"

"What are you talking about? I married my best friend...in fact, 'you' were at the wedding and we're still together.  The three kids are now more or less happy adults. We have friends good enough to help hide the bodies.  Etc. Etc. Etc..."

"Yes but you could have done so much more..."

Yeah, no. RIP grandma, maybe I'll look you up on the other side

/That doesn't even touch on assorted great great grandparents that I have pictures of - "Who the hell are you and why are you disturbing my eternal rest?"

The conversation I'd want to avoid would probably start out something like this:

"Uh, listen, wet . . . uh . . . well, uh . . . okay, here it is: we've been watching you masturbate, and we're very worried about you . . . "

Wow, now I'm imagining my 19th century forebears insisting on checking our phrenology and the health of the race.

We are of course nowhere near understanding how to build a fully convincing human-level intelligence capable of general conversation but...

I have to wonder where the line is between creating a simulation of someone and re-creating someone, and if you can have something convincing enough to be worth it without being so convincing you feel like you've enslaved the deceased as your personal chat bot.

Do I like the idea of having a simulation of my parents around to introduce to great grandchildren like you might show someone a video or photograph today?  Yes.  Do I like the idea of it being so realistic you actually fool yourself into thinking it's the actual person?  Not at all.

Potentially more importantly, do we like the idea of people creating Reg Barclay-like simulations of others as their own personal toys?  Like that's not gonna get even creepier than dead relatives really, Really farking fast.

/knowing the seriously creepy, they'll combine both problems

Some Junkie Cosmonaut: do we like the idea of people creating Reg Barclay-like simulations of others as their own personal toys?

Can't stop the signal, Mal.

We now have robots with convincing human movement - Disney has acrobatic stunt double robots, ASIMO is getting spooky-close to moving in such a human-like way you can't tell the difference.

I'm surprised you can't get a basic sexbot built into a RealDoll covering yet.  You'd think at least one porn star would be OK with acting as the physical and behavioral model for one, and somebody, somewhere would pay for it.  With a bit of object recognition, speech recognition, speech synthesis, and, of course, some extra internal parts to make the naughty bits behave realistically, that's something that could have been done at least last year if not half a decade ago.

And once that happens, somebody's going to sell custom skins and do audio customization for them.
