Most other countries ended slavery first, and didn't go to war with themselves to do it.

And there were enough restrictions on black people for the following century to make it seem like they were still slaves.

There is much of American history to be proud of. You can be a proud American but also acknowledge the many sins committed which are integral to our history.

I understand that myopic mouth breathers think that is "focusing on the negative" but... we stole the country from the indigenous people while also doing extraordinary things like the trans continental railroad etc. all of that was done with immigrants who came and built that and still do.

The same people who want to white wash our history also ignore the value immigration bring to our country. That it built and continues to build this country. The value of the native peoples and the debt we still owe them.

Basically, those that can't comprehend the complex nature of our history should be in no position to explain to people how we should talk about and teach our history.

Get rid of this asshole before he causes anymore massive damage.

"We're proud to live in a country that liberated slaves."

What was his position on Confederate statues again?

HeeHawley derped the loudest and not too coincidentally got the biggest round of applause for it.

Its recycled propaganda for the most art.

"Dems hate America/ GOP lurve America".

Complete BS, of course but it is a central tenet of the GOP propaganda narrative. A staple for decades.

How can you say you love America if you admit America made mistakes? True Patriots know that inflexible, unwavering belief that America was born perfect and was always perfect in everything is the only path to true love.

By 'history', they mean white supremacy. Hell, even the token mention of slavery infers that we gave the slaves their freedom.

Because it seems to some of us that no one should ever have tried to own other human beings to begin with.

Pretty much the entire world practiced some form of slavery or serfdom. The specifics varied. When and how it ended varied.

We clung to the idea larger that we should have because change would have been bad for the stockholders plantation owners. We couldn't stop mining coal picking cotton with slaves because it will devastate the economy.

We didn't so much start with nothing as we stole what was here before we got here from Native Americans.

Europeans stole from Native Americans as they stole from each other. Conquest has a long worldwide history. It was made easier in the Americas because of disease.

The Romans stole their empire, which was in turn stolen by Goths and Huns and Turks. Muslims stole Spain and centuries later the Spanish stole it back.

Alphax: Most other countries ended slavery first, and didn't go to war with themselves to do it.

There is enough continuing systemic and institutional encumbrance and racist resistance to diminish our nation morally, intellectually and economically for another good long while.

Possibly.

I'm certain the idea didn't originate with me though I don't know its actual origins.

I can't remember where I first heard it either, but I remember the second part being Dems loved America like a parent lives a child. IE, "When you Fark up, I'm gonna call you out, because I'm trying to  make you into a decent human."

I mean yay for this, but what we need is a less verbose response. I'm imagining someone in StL reading this, getting past the first paragraph and saying "them words is too big and complex, stupid fancy book learnin liberals" and move on. If you really want to grab people's attention you need some cliche and easily understood writing/speeches. Just say he's a liar and traitor, point out how he's a liar and traitor, add "I'm just asking questions" at the end of the piece and boom - hit job with enough ambiguity that keeps your employer from a lawsuit. I'm not saying I have the answers, and I hate writing, I'm just tired of these nuanced, high-brow responses that can only be understood by people that read more than just a cereal box. And then here on fark or links elsewhere that say SiCk BuRn oN ThEm when in reality the people that should be reading it and having a moment of clarity take a look at the wall of words and say "I ain't readin that"

/Ending my ramblin rant.

How is this going to work out? You can't be a Trump-firster and run against the presumptive nominee.

Republicans actually hate the idea of what America could be and should be. They hate the march toward a more perfect union. They hate a large majority of Americans. They love the idea of America in the past where white supremacy reigned.

So you are going with the, "Other people did similar things, so that makes it OK?" excuse?

Whitewashing history is not acceptable, unless you are a whiny, conservative snowflake.

If I get to punch a Republican in the face, I'm not wasting it on an unemployed actor who lives with his mother, I'm going all the way to former president Donald J. Fatass. And I may or may not have brass knuckles at the time.
