Milky-looking rice wine sounds like an entire section of the Geneva Conventions list of violations.

It sounds like a permit to drive the porcelain bus.
The problem with rice based drinks is that they get you f*cked up way too fast.

Well I've never made it, but it is a good buzz and the "sampling" I've had have been delicious, so there's that.

While I'd admit I've never had it first hand, article states it's typically only between 5 and 8% ABV.  So going by the numbers it shouldn't be too much worse than a slightly stronger beer, at least in terms of ruining your evening.

My problem is that it's described as having a "full bodied mouth feel" while being sweet and tangy.  So not only does it look like milk, that sounds like it also tastes like milk that's about to turn.  Yeah, I'll pass.

Not sure it's the rice.

Japan brews a hazy sake that's very similar. It's not as bad as it sounds. I prefer it to clear sake because it's more smooth.

Makeoli goes great (not surprisingly) with Korean BBQ.  It's basically fermented rice with the strength of beer.
We got some nuruk, but haven't tried making my own yet.

I believe most sake is hazy to start with and gets filtered clear.  When I hit the sushi and steak houses (in the before times), I usually for a bottle of the milky stuff.  Snow Maiden I think was the more common one.

So something akin to Nigori sake? It sounds like it's on the sweeter side, so it has my approval.

So you're saying you could drink this in a clear glass on your 9 AM Zoom meeting and just tell them it's milk...

It's super easy.  Check out Maangchi's video on it.

Right now I've got two batches of Chinese rice wine going.  Same concept, different starter/enzymes.

Ooh...thanks for the internet rabbit hole you just sent me down. We've been on a fermentation binge this last year, and this is new. Currently have some lacto ferments, a batch of miso, and  5+ gallons of stout active (just kegged an IPA).

Sending my wife some links to Maangchi. Guess I know what we're doing this March.

If you're into weird ferments, check out daoubanjiang.  I got some aspergillus oryzae spores and fava beans, and I'll get some started soonish.

Soju!

Colder, the better.  It's like a helper for cheap beer.

15 oz. mediocre vodka
3 oz. dry vermouth
1 24 oz. vacuum bottle
15 pickled onions
1 martini glass
1 Elder Scrolls Online account, with ESO Plus
1 trading guild membership
1 social guild membership

That's how I plan to get "online crafting" tipsy - sadly, I can't get drunk with that.

I finished my last bottle the other day, so I am not getting a kick out of this.

...it is on my shopping list for my next trip to H-Mart, but I would kill to get my hands on some higher quality premium bottles.

Slightly carbonated, a bit sweet, and can easily be overdone. I love the stuff because I can pour it into a bowl and feel classy  drinking it.

It is also fun for drinking with friends because everyone new to it underestimates it until it smashes them.

Tell them it is Pocari Sweat. Makgeolli is a bit too translucent to be milk, but has the right look for Pocari Sweat-a Japanese sports drink that will just as easily throw them off because it is a different rabbit hole.
