On the one hand Fark china, on the other Fark the ioc, on the other if the us doesn't go it will make the hockey tournament less interesting.

If we skip china we better be skipping whatever upcoming events are thrown in horrible dictatorships in the middle east too otherwise it'll just look like hypocritical whining

Let the athletes go as independents, like the Russian athletes in certain (all?) fields will be forced to at the 2020(ish, if they happen) Olympics.

They can still get their medals, but the country behind them officially shuns the host country.

If the US decides to opt out of the olympics held in China I suspect the global response is going to wind up being "Oh no. Anyway...".

America simply doesn't have the same political clout it had when boycotting the olympics held in the USSR, and a large part of why is Trump's antics these past 4 years.  That's before we get into how a boycott would even work; travel to, and business with, China isn't being restricted like it was with the USSR, so in a situation where the US didn't pay for anything the participants would still be able to go anyway.

China is the new GOP boogey man. It accomplishes 2 things.

Punishes China for daring to unleash covid on the world and make strong daddy Trump look bad

Makes Biden look like he's weak on China, which is now a major GOP talking point. Even though no President (even Trump) has been especially tough on them

At least the Summer Olympics should be taken back to Greece.  They should simply build a one-time, state-of-the-art facility and every country that participates helps pay for upkeep.  Do the same for the Winter Olympics where it makes sense.  The only part I actually enjoy about it moving around are the ceremonies that the different countries put on.  Beyond that, meh.  After the mess that was Rio, it just needs to stop.

Google "World Equestian Games"

They all have plenty of international competitions other than the Olympics, though they may struggle to get on TV especially live.  NBC shows a fair number of taped events on weekend afternoons when they have nothing live.
