the operative words here are "full-time."
they'll cover a lot of the slack with cheaper, less benefit-ed, part-timers.

"Full-time" employees in retail haven't been a thing since the 1970s, and even by the 80s it was becoming a more and more rare thing.

/first entered the job market in 1982
//had one full-time retail job that lasted about 4 months before it was removed and I was moved to part-time
///slashies come in triplets

And those part timers will tell you whatever you are looking for is out of stock and they can order it from the website. It will be there in 6-8 days. To be fair the TV i bought there last month was cheaper at BB than on Amazon or anywhere else and they actually had it in stock. Also they didn't try to sell me Monster Cables or an extended warranty.

I think they are turning their stores into mini-Amazon warehouses.

The last couple of items I've purchased from them I ordered online and the brought it out to my car.

Keep a few people in the store for tire kickers and geek squad and the rest can be light warehouse/delivery people.

All of which means a lot less employees.

It seems like everything from big box stores to theme parks do that. They put a cap to 25 hours or whatever it is so they don't have to pay benefits.

Didn't Circuit City do this just before they went bust?

I mean to be honest, bestbuy has drastically improved in the last few years. Would be nice if they were able to keep better stock on a few things, but i imagine a lot of that is out of their control.

You can go in there and find random computer components at prices competitive enough that you don't mind buying there vs offline.

If you are looking for a monitor or tv or whatever, you have plenty of choices. Their appliance selection and prices isn't terrible.

But like, i don't get what people are looking for in an expert in employees. I bought a new main tv last month. I did all my homework to figure out what i was looking for, narrowed it down to a few choices, popped into best buy to see them in person and make sure i wasn't missing out on anything else, went back, did some more homework, and then said, "hey, i can buy it at bestbuy for only a few percent more than the cheapest price i can find online, which will simplify me getting it and returning it if i have an issue" so bought it there.

That is the niche they fill now. I don't expect an expert in products there, if i did, i'd go to a specialty store, or seeing as its 2021, consult actual real expert sources online. That is how people shop. Bestbuy could have shiat it out of a vending machine for all i care.
