"Apprenticeship" and "direct mentorship" sound like micromanagement to me.

What's a middle manager to do without someone to micromanage?

Upper management has noticed the massive decline in operating costs for our company through long-term WFH, and is trying to find ways of making it permanent.  Some people (myself included) do like coming into a shared office at least once in a while, but having a physical office doesn't make any sense for a great many companies.

Weirdly, there is even open consideration toward raising wages/bonuses with some of the savings, while shiat-canning people who just loaf around on the couch.  We *might* be moving toward a win-win situation, but it's still Q1 and these decisions tend to get made in April.

Our company is not public, so that might be part of why the focus is shifting to quality over tradition.

There does seem to be a little disconnect between "we must get the children back into schools or they will literally die from loneliness" and "working from home 24/7 is the new normal for professional adults". Plenty of talk/thought going into the financial ramifications of working from home, but nobody seems to be considering the mental/emotional costs. Of course, if you already hate your co-workers (or your commute) this may not seem like much of an issue.

Short term, that all makes sense.

But don't think for a second upper management isn't thinking day and night how to leverage this new paradigm to get more money in their pockets.

Western counties have well paid staff, with benefits, and who want nice working conditions.

Now that you've demonstrated how effectively people can work from home, they also know they can transition more and more work to countries that pay a fraction of what they pay you.

This doesn't end well for wealthy countries. It will be great for a few countries that are just the right balance of poor, educated, and have just enough infrastructure to make it all work.

WFH was good for a while but even for an introvert like me, that wore off quickly. And it's not because of my home circumstances, which are great - two dogs, no kids, and a wife who sometimes chooses to WFH, and sometimes is working out in the field (or at her own office).

The funny part is, I brought my staff back to the office about 6 weeks ago (with exception for those who want to stay at home) . About 80% came back. And we're expanding our space, partly to accommodate all of the farking zoom meetings everyone's having now.

Many places I have worked, the building itself is leased by the company, at exorbitant rates, from another business, coincidentally owned by the bosses of the company I worked for.

I've been working from home for a decade. I've never once missed the office environment.

Ditto. And unlike with schooling, I'm a grownup with fully formed emotional intelligence and deep relationships who isn't reliant on social environments for basic functioning and cultural adaptation.

LMAO.

Ok, I'm a grownup. We'll just start there.

Meanwhile, our board just approved permanent work from home for back office IT and ancillary clinical support services.
