As a fan of the series before it came out in the U.S., Rebuild 3.0 +1.0 have turned into the Chinese Democracy of anime movies at this point. Khara probably isn't finished with it and all the COVID lockdowns just keep giving it cover for not putting the movie out on time.

if/when this ever does finally hit theaters, Crunchyroll, Cartoon Network or someone needs to do a Eva marathon for all the series & movies just so people can remember what that fark all this was about in the first place.

Basically it seems like Anno spent the intervening years between the originals and the reboot snatching bits and pieces of other franchises to wrap some Evas in. The last movie was very Eureka 7-esque with the new flying ship and ragtag rebel crew, for example. I'll still watch the last film if/when it comes out but the enthusiasm is gone; it's kind of morbid curiosity at this point.

Eva was the only anime series I got into and Rebuild is the only anime I've watched in the past decade aside from some Ghibli with the kiddo so for me it was just a chance to watch some more mecha shiat without the mental health messaging of the original.

Not to say all of that was bad, some of it helped contextualize my mom's struggles with depression which is kinda cool on reflection. But there's still a part of me that likes watching robots fighting.

I expect the finale to be big stupid weird fun. I for get the new pilot's name, I just call her Fan Service. But she was written to be someone happy to be piloting Eva which is all I ever really wanted.

The last Eva I watched were the 1.11, 2.22 and 3.33; maybe there was another I missed, or need to rewatch 3.33 for the Eureka 7 sample.  E7 is one of my favorites.

A character in Eva who's happy? Blasphemy!

I thought the re-releases (You are (not) alone, etc) were just reedited versions of the original series, condensing the whole thing into a shorter format.

I remember the original series hinted at a lot of really wild stuff that the ending never delivered.  In fact, the original ending was incomprehensible.  The movie started out saying it was how Eva was supposed to end, but other than doing a better job killing everyone, it didn't make much more sense.

I've got 1.0 and 2.0 on blu-ray.  I'll have to pick up the last two, because I'm a sucker for punishment I guess.

Darling in the Franxx: Mechas, dubious father figure, relationship tension, some people die. Odd... semi-sexual piloting. Weird Afterlife?

Death & Rebirth retell most of the original series.  End of Eva is an alternate ending to the original series.  Rebuild is a new telling of the whole thing.

There is a fan theory going around that the Eva story is basically a series of time loops (since each version has slight differences) and that the Rebuild movies are simply the latest iteration.

Also, if you really want to "understand" Eva, take a gander at the fan wiki for it with all of the explanations.  There is a ton of lore that is just not touched on in the series that either gets mentioned in passing or mentioned in some alternate telling like a video game.

The original ending was incomprehensible because they literally ran out of money and had to finish the serious on the cheap.

The original series ended in batshiat crazy town.

The new movies look at batshiat crazy town, quietly chuckle at how quaint it is, and keep on driving.

The soul crushing bad acid trip psychological trauma mixed with existential terror of an apocalypse few know is happening is what I liked about Evangelion...

Are you guys saying this new shiat is just normal robot fighting cheerful cartoons? meh

That reminds me that I really should play the two Eureka Seven games I bought for the PS2 all those years ago.

I was a sophomore in college when Evangelion 1.0 came out in 2007.  Evangelion 3.0 came out in 2012.

I honestly don't know how to think about this other than I just want this movie to come out so I can have closure to the whole Rebuild of Evangelion thing.  Then I can promptly forget about it because it feels like a phenomenal waste of time for some reason.

Watched the first series and movies a decade-ish ago, thought it was pretty overrated. I had a friend who talked about the symbolism and the jerking off and the whole thing seemed like a messy letdown. I'm kind of tempted to re-watch it.
