Unaccompanied. So as long as the detention centers are relatively comfortable and they're eventually reunited with their families one way or the other, I really don't see the problem.

While they ARE minors and illegal border crossing IS a low-level crime, it's still a crime, so I don't really expect American law enforcement to just give 'em a farking lollipop and send 'em on their way. Plus, the rest of the trek would still be pretty damn dangerous, especially for an unaccompanied kid.

Unaccompanied.

The author makes a big deal about the unaccompanied minors not being able to leave...

What are they supposed to do?  Let minors out onto the street to find their own way?

It's not like kids in cages under Trump.  It's more like a camp they can't leave until they find a sponsor, a permanent center, or family to put them with.

If they don't have spots, can't find the family, or have a sponsor right away.... what are they supposed to do?  Turn them to the streets where they're vulnerable?  Give them a bus ticket to toledo with 12$ and a blanket?  Put them in the Marriott?

Though, that last one gave me an idea. Government should seize Trump hotel(s) and house them there.

I'm not happy about it, but even if they started construction on brand new facilities the day Biden was sworn in they wouldn't be ready yet because building things takes time.

Complaining about A for Alpha and B for Bravo is... weird.  When I'm on a phone call and have to spell something out I use the same system (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, echo) to make sure the person understands what I'm saying without me winding up in this situation:

Find some random dude with a windowless van and candy and hand them over?

This seems reasonable as an inbetween as they find space elsewhere for a more permanent spot.

If they're not locked behind bars every night and aren't really restricted as far as socializing, no treated like criminals, and all that I have no problem with this.  It's a temp solution that doesn't have an easy answer.

If you have a problem with this you should offer to sponsor and take some in.  I'm not being facetious either.  The more sponsors they have the quicker they can get them out of there or not even put them there in the first place.

The way I learned it was just reading it over and over for a minute every day. After a couple weeks I was reading less and reciting more, until I was just reciting. Then I added it in a very limited sense, like learning how to spell my name with those words. If I was going to call a vendor for help with a part, I'd think the part number through before and repeat the words for the letters before making the call. Looking up a part number in our system I'd say the words instead of the letters as I typed. Keep a window open on another monitor to reference for when you get stuck.

It really is worth it and doesn't take long.

This isn't indefinitely.  This is as long as it takes to send them to a permanent facility, with a sponsor family, or actual family to put them with.

This isn't separating them from family to use as leverage to get them to agree to go home.

It's temporary housing.  That's it.

I'm sure there is an endless supply of "host families" at the border willing to take in the thousands of unaccompanied minors that show up every year.

it's a real problem that requires complex solutions. You can't just let kids wander the streets by themselves and you can't put them in jail. How are these centers  any different than an orphanage? It's not ideal but it's 3 meals and a bed at the very least for kids until their situations can be sorted out.
