Perhaps Congress should look into why they themselves allow their own members to broadcast that same disinformation from the floors of the f*cking House and Senate and from their Congressional email accounts, speeches and other government-subsidized resources.

Neat. I work for one of those companies and I've been submitting town hall questions to our CEO asking what were going to do about this. Can't wait to watch this hearing.

Every time I hear a congressional hearing, usually on NPR, I hear Gym Jordan or someone like him speak utter falsehoods, and I have to turn off the radio before I smash it in a rage.

These hearings. I must hear them.

They will go in history along with the WIlliam Gaines comic book hearing, and the Frank Zappa - Al Gore debate.

These hearings will be amazing.

I'm confused.  How in fark's sake is Fox News not the problem here?  Going after cable companies who carry Fox News, instead of Fox News, is a biatch move.

not sure why they call it far-right when almost every single GOP rep bought into and voted in line with it.  it's mainstream, and it's all that remains.

Launching a frontal assault against Murdoch media would be electoral suicide.

And going after cable companies when streaming television is set to wipe them out in a few years is supposed to help... how?

I don't know that this is a good thing.
While I abhor the crap that spews from these programs; do we really want government oversight into what programs can be broadcast over cable?
Keep in mind, the Republicans could be in charge again in four years.
Do we want them holding their own congressional hearings on cable broadcasts?

It gives the appearance of doing something without actually doing anything, and especially without doing anything that would upset an oligarch's profits.

This is the purpose of congressional hearings.

I'd say it's harder to make everyone tell lies.. except they've been doing that at the state level for years, demanding that doctors lie to their patients.

Fta: "The prolonged severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the attack on our Capitol on January 6 have driven home a frightening reality: the spread of disinformation and extremism by traditional news media presents a tangible and destabilizing threat,'..."

Traditional?

Well, propaganda states are traditional in authoritarian shiathole countries but not so much in the US.

That noted, I have been making this case for donkeys years and its nice that Congress is finally picking up on it.

All that said the solution to lies is truth.

Thats whats been missing from the equation all these years.

Not the milquetoast criticisms of the Dem leadership and the access corporate media but the straight goods.

Are we going to get an investigation into why the FCC allows Sinclair's misinformation?

Also ,would a ruling against FoxNews etc. force CNN ,MSNBC etc. to question bad actors in government or make them double down out of fear and not question false statements even more?

I got nothing, just wanted to be part of this thread.

/ haven't worked for a cable company in over 15 years and certainly wouldn't represent one with which I have ethical or moral issues with.

That is why I should have the right to my own cable channel. The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States guarantees my right!

MidwestPartisan was clever to point this out.

The right to lie has always been absolute, which is why no country has laws against fraud, libel, slander, defamation, incitement, uttering false statements to government officials, or perjury.

Oh, wait....

Even the countries with the most zealous traditions of free expression limit speech that is sufficiently false to be harmful, especially if it is malicious. Any benefit of the doubt allegedly deserved in this area with regard to US media/social media corporations went on life support on November 4th, 2016, and died on January 6th, 2021.

If meaningful steps are not taken to remove propaganda from the information environment, the US will not have a meaningful democracy.

While they have all these cable guys there why don't they ask them what they did with all that money we gave them to build a fiber optic system coast to coast? What DID we get for that investment?

Isn't this kind of a recursive process driven by what consumers want as infotainment as much as propaganda. Realistically, cable and internet as a matter of good public policy need to be treated as broadcast channels and telecommunications and regulated as such. Good public policy would create a product modeled after the BBC. Personally, I am as fed up with Rachel Maddow as much as anything. What truly ruins her true talent is her attitude towards guests who don't provide the answers she wants, and she dumps the interview. Also when she sets up a story for an interview, she does this fake humility, "I am not an expert, and is there anything you want to correct.." while the guest fawns,"Oh, Rachel, you got everything spot on..."

The worst is MSNBC will not have guest who do not drive their narrative. Why is Thomas Frank never a guest anymore? He is well spoken and telegenic, but unacceptable in editorial content?

What needs to happen is an amendment that says: If you are a news channel, you must broadcast verifiable news, not opinions or social commentary. You can have an opinion and commentary channel, but it has to be labeled as such.

This still doesn't address the real issue of why so many people are such dumbasses that they believe the bullshiat that they see and hear and read.

I've said this before and I'll say it again.  This bullshiat doesn't take hold in other countries, not as much.  It's almost as if half the population in America has some kind of racial bias against people with certain skin colors, and that these disinformation networks are just making money off of telling people what they already want to hear.

Some version of an updated "Fairness Doctrine" could be drafted if there is a way to make it applicable to cable and digital entities.

As long as conservatives gleefully gargle lies, the anti-American liars of rightwing media will continue to vomit poisonous deceptions into the eager maws of the contemptible coonts who tune in.

Conservatism would vanish without a steady stream of falsehoods and fairytales.  It's an ideological cancer that appeals to the weak, the ignorant, the petty, the vain, and the violent.

Conservatism is anti-Americanism.  To tolerate it is to humor a tumor.

Ruin all conservatives.

If you're advertising yourself as a news network, but spew nothing except lies, yes I want the government to step in because calling yourself "news" is giving yourself legitimacy you don't deserve in order to deceive the gullible.

It's no different than any other truth in advertising law that exists around the world, which I assume you've been fine with to date.

Not as well as focusing on ownership instead of something that gives the next Republican an opening to insert "Fairness " into.
