Those individuals contribute to the ideals you're talking about. Part of remembering history so that you don't repeat it is noting the people who were there at the time to help make these changes.

So when you name a building after someone, erect a statue, etc., the message is that we should overlook all of the bad stuff because they also did good?

Just stop naming things after people and building statues. And when removing these people's names, nobody is sandblasting their contributions to US History - we're just saying that they don't deserve to be memorialized this way because the implicit message is that they were perfect.

Whatever the merits of that proposal, spending a million bucks and vast amounts of staff time on eradicating names that are already there, and doing it for empty damn buildings that you somehow can't get open, that's just a stupid squandering of resources that would be far better dedicated to other goals.

*shrug* Historically, the people who most usually hated on Lincoln were racist Confederates.  Therefore, it follows logically that the people hating on Lincoln now are racist Confederates.  So now we can be reasonably sure that the SF school board - along with Farkers who agree with the school board's decision - are racist Confederates, and should be called racist Confederates every time they're brought up.

No, I disagree, we should also teach and acknowledge people's faults as well as their accomplishments.  Not only is it historically accurate to do so, it shows that no one is infallible and that absolute perfection is impossible and not the ultimate goal in life.  Not a waste of time at all.

I don't think anyone is calling anybody perfect, except you.

Learn history, put yourself in peoples shoes at a point in time in history, study the socio-economic norms of the time, then with that knowledge look at the decisions that were made.

I know, it's so much eaiser to say Lincoln did something bad to the Native Americans so lets throw out the fact that he was the reason slavery ended when it did. It's called celebrating leadership in dificult times

I also want to say that the renaming bullshiat is purely a product of an out of control and unaccountable school board. Nobody in San Francisco agrees with what they're doing. We all think they're stupid assholes.

I have never before looked forward to the city general election as much as I do this one, too bad it isn't until 2022.  These farkers are wrapping themselves up robes of piety & holier than thou attitudes to raise their profiles for further city political positions. And doing this while completely failing to educate our kids for the past year is just way too much, even for SF.

This is a perfect example of what happens when a group purges all moderating influences. I bet that after a long string of unanimous votes, the fact this particular vote had one dissenting vote meant that the next vote they took was a unanimous vote to expel that member as 'problematic'.

Me too. But also looking forward to a recall petition. So unbelievably pissed off about this (and the whole schools not reopening way back in October when we were in yellow tier.)

It's a good idea to consult actual historians paid to do history before doing historical things. Who knew? Besides, we have enough schools named after Presidents. They are plenty of local CA historical movers, shakers and role models who would be better choices.
