They all suck.

Well, they did unfairly make me always think that lacrosse players are rapists, when in reality it's only 70% of them.

Suspend them for two weeks, then make return contingent on negative COVID test.

Frankly, many people in this nation and the world suck.

Humans are very good at ignoring things that get other people killed or hurt.
(Forget about themselves, they can croak if they want)

This whole pandemic has been a clusterf*ck.

I just wonder if we're doing it better than previous ones
At least we have better drugs out faster.

Nope, "prevent" is the key word here.

Right. But other than drunks and idiocy on the roads, their stupidity was usually only harming themselves and people that willingly chose to be with them.

Fark just had an article the other day with top scientists saying that COVID was endemic and that we should all just get used to it being here as part of the human condition.  So in my household we wear masks and will be getting our vaccine but the constant articles about masks when scientists (now that Trump is gone) are saying to just get used to COVID because it's not going anywhere just don't have the same impact they used to when we had someone to blame.

flagrant violation of university COVID-19 expectations

Were these "expectations" codified into enforceable "rules"?  Or are they just "guidelines".

This has been obvious since February 2020, at least that is when I had that conversation. When the world wiped out smallpox it was a disease most people didn't get -- half the population in major US cities has had CV. The better solution would have been to just let it rip as fast as possible, we'd get the same result in the end and without putting 70 million people out of work.

Nah, administrations are generally much too scared to implement anything of this nature that they'll have to enforce.Aside from enforcement requiring actual work, the administration opens itself up to additional liability. Doing the right thing in this case is too hard, potentially expensive, and a potential PR minefield.

I'm not saying I agree with it or even that I understand. These people are self-interested pieces of crap who only care about their own skins; the students are just sources of money and, if they succeed, good PR for the school.

Not where I work.  They have put the hammer down.

For example:  Friday night, Campus Safety busted a small dorm party.  By noon on Saturday every one of those students were escorted off campus, and suspended for 2 weeks.  They are not allowed back on campus until they go through a Student Conduct hearing with the Dean.

We have also sent the whole baseball team home effective tomorrow due to a couple of them testing positive.

"Frustration was rampant at Duke University after a large, mask-less gathering with up to 50 people took place off campus on Friday night."

I live in a college town where I'd guess there are bigger gatherings every weekend, based on crowds I've see in party house neighborhoods. The county health department limits parties to ten people, and the board of commissioners passed a resolution authorizing civil fines for violations, but I've never heard of citations being issued. On campus the university maintains order, off campus it's the same as it was a hundred years ago, when fraternities offered a refuge from prohibition enforcement.

University officials say they'll begin contact tracing and surveillance testing people who attended the gathering.

To heck with that. Expel them.
