Had tickets incl. garage and paddock passes, but with covid eliminating garage access and fanzone, we decided to put them off until next year. This will be the first year I will miss since 2016.

What kind of accommodations do you have?  RV?  Hotel?  I went in the 2003 with a family friend.  He lived in Port Orange and thought he could rent an RV two weeks before the Daytona 500.  We got one, but it was absolute crap.  Couldn't keep it warm at night, when the temp dropped below 40.  The roof wasn't reinforced, so we couldn't climb on top.  Meanwhile, the guy next to us had the sweetest RV I've ever seen.  We watched Columbia explode on his big-screen TV he had mounted in one of his luggage racks.  Ok, that part wasn't awesome.

screw punxsutawney phil, 24 of daytona is the first signs of the year that the winter might end soon (even though today and tomorrow will probably be the coldest days of the year here)

We have always got a hotel room. Get to the speedway when the track opens in the morning, Roam around the garages, etc. Get out on the infield prior to race and then find a spot on the bleachers exiting the int. horseshoe for the first hour or so. Then roam around different vantage points all day until night. Go back to hotel, get up early and go back to watch final hours at the speedway.
My buddy is on the rv slot waiting list so when someone dies, we may get a spot one day.

Weather forecast looks like it should be a dry race with only a small chance of showers and it will be cool, but not the cold conditions that can pop up in winter.  Its a shame, I prefer endurance races that have drivers having to survive wet conditions

Very iiiiiiiinteresting... it seems that IMSA TV isn't geoblocked in Canada this year after all...

2021-01-30 3:39:28 PM
That's the biggest prototype field and car count I've seen in a long time for this race.  Good times.

Please note: Idols are allowed for sports car racing. They are banned on safety grounds for Indycar.

That was oooooogly. And stupid.

They are doing a split start to avoid clownshoes, and they got it anyway

79 rear has decided it no longer wants to race

2021-01-30 3:49:53 PM
no question about that debris

2021-01-30 3:50:25 PM
I don't think that is going to buff out

2021-01-30 3:50:28 PM
Given the split start, not enough time for the marshals to scramble and get the debris off the track.

2021-01-30 3:50:37 PM
And if falls off at the exit of the infield. Lovely.

Safety car 1

I forget, do they have slow zones or right to a safety car?

2021-01-30 3:51:54 PM
79 just passed itself

2021-01-30 3:52:11 PM
Wow, that could have been a lot bigger and the 79 was completely innocent

soupafi: I forget, do they have slow zones or right to a safety car?

North American racing doesn't understand the concept of "slow zones" or "virtual safety cars"

/remember, IMSA is owned by NASCAR

Right to safety car.  I don't think a slow zone or even a Code 60 would be safe enough for Daytona, given how small it is.

I can't wait till the coverage swaps off NBC proper.

Given the size of the field and relatively small track layout (for endurance racing), it is probably safer to go with the full course yellow.  After all, even under yellow we have seen clownshoes happen Daytona.

There are feeds of the event that don't have the commercials if you look for them

Man, they are being aggressive with 23+ hours left.  I know these races are more dashes than they used to, but you do have to survive.

Anyone who paid for Trackpass last year still has access to it for another couple of months as a make-good for the COVID-enforced hiatus last Spring

/then I suspect everything will move to Peacock

I can't wait for night racing. Best part of endurance motorsports.
