Well, the "was it Tom or Bob?" question has been settled. No more coasting.

The issue when it was Bill and Tom, guys would go there and live with the culture because they were certain to sniff the SB every year.  Now it's not a guarantee so why would good free agents go there and have to deal with Bill.

Winning can mask a lot of issues.  I think the next few years will be very informative regarding which parts of "The Patriot Way" were actual factors for success and which parts were things people were just willing to put up with as long as they were winning.

For me there wasn't an argument simply by virtue of their roles. An exceptionally talented QB is always going to give a team more of a bump up than an exceptionally talented coach simply because the player is the one that has to execute. Brady moving to an average team makes them instantly better. However, also adding Fournette, Gronk, Antonio Brown and others makes them a playoff team.

If a coach has shiat to work with he's not going to be able to do anything regardless of how good he is. Belichick lost star players both to free agency and 7 covid opt-outs (Hightower and Chung most notably.) He picked up a scrap-heap QB and almost went .500.

I think the way to judge someone like Belichick is to see how quickly he can get the Patriots franchise back into the playoffs, with what players. One of the talents he had was to figure out how to use undervalued players and get the most out of them. Let's see what happens next year.
