The Jam? Stone Roses? The La's? MGMT? Roxy Music? I get that they're from the right era, but I can't imagine those fit anyone's definition of "Dad Rock".

And a lot of that list is more accurately "Granddad Rock".

Steely Dan, named after a dildo, is the ultimate "dad rock." I became a fan when I started playing drums and needed to be as good as those session guys.

I like that music is so disposable now that a 7 year old song is considered dad rock

For the most part, that list of songs is garbage.  (Nickelback? Avril Lavigne?)

But Motorhead doesn't belong in any category.  They were in a league of their own, and the music will stand the test of time for eternity.  Lemmy didn't die, he just went home.

Looks like a list of songs fitting no particular characterization.
If you're gonna make up a list of something you'll have to do the research, not simply hold down the "shuffle" button.

I find that playlist annoying. Is there a "Now That's What I Call Granddad Rock" compilation?

It reads more like a list of songs that the distributor got a good price on and decided to throw on one album.

So from 1970ish Free to 40+ years later Imagine Dragons ... really narrowing things down there.

And that's before overloading the list with songs that have been played so much that you could happily go the rest of your life without hearing them again. Does anybody really want to hear 'Livin' on a Prayer's yet again?

On one hand, I'm like - cool, would rather you be rocking that than something else, plus she actually digs the music.

veering wildly off-topic, but I can't shake the thought that the "new" "punk" (I would add more quotes if it was at all possible) may be soundcloud mumble rappers, or something else that slides past my ears and doesn't really register as quality music.

I work with a young female associate who wears Hendrix and Willie Nelson shirts among others to work and I once asked her about her eclectic taste in music at her age.  She had no idea the shirts she wore had anything to do with musicians, she said they were cheap and cool looking.  I certainly hope that is not their description of dad rock.

Iron Horse/Born to lose is the greatest musical composition in all of human history.  It's perfection.  I will be a bucktoothed, cranky, incontinent, 127 year old man living in an alleyway and still not be sick of listening to that song.

I don't have any kids and my nieces and nephew are way too young. Encouraging news though.

CSB: The old man always had the oldies station on in the car. I didn't start diggin' on classic rock until 8th or 9th grade, but I can tell you exactly what Wisconsin county road we were on when I first heard Riders on the Storm (thankfully the unedited version). Dusk, wintertime, mostly cloudy. And for some reason one of the most menacing basslines I've ever heard. It was awesome.

Personally I'd rather have something like Overkill, Born to Raise Hell, God Was Never on Your Side, Stone Dead Forever, or hell, even Bomber over Ace of Spades. Don't get me wrong, I like Ace of Spades, but it's overplayed to the point where that's all many folks think of when they hear the name Motorhead.

You just reminded me, I was recently watching MST3K on youtube and some movie had Ace of Spades during the opening credits. The MST3K guys were joking as if it was some ridiculous obscure punk song they'd never heard before. Really soured me on MST3K, what Gen-X white guys who are obviously very knowledgeable about pop culture haven't heard of Ace of Spades?

Other than a few bands here and there I've found the last 15 years of music to be pretty bad.  I guess I can double down on being a Dad.

I also know people who thought Che Guevara was a frontman for some 60s band and that's why he was on so many shirts. If history teaches us anything, it's that kids don't pay attention in history.
