TiVo's been fully dead since 2016, when the fine folks from Rovi (previously Macrovision) bought them and changed their name to "TiVo Corporation."

TiVo is now basically a shiatty DRM company wearing the skin of the defunct original company to disguise their crappiness.  I wouldn't expect anything much from them anymore beyond a gradual slide into worse and worse ways to sneak advertising back in.

It doesn't help that most companies charge more in subscription fees for ad-free services than they obtain in revenue for ad-supported services because they consider the former to be a premium product that is subject to higher profit margins.

My tolerance for ads has been steadily dropping over the years.  There are too many of them per hour, they're too repetitive, they're too scummy, and they're too often targeting seniors.  Then you have the special hell that is election season, especially when the attack ads from PACs come out.

No thanks.  I just record everything now and make a donation to PBS once in a while.

I disagree.  The time I don't spend watching ads on hulu is worth way more to me than the extra $6 per month to get rid of them.

Man... the death of TiVo is one of the bigger heartbreaks in the tech ecosystem.  A stark lesson in why it's important to protect your trademarks, and make sure your product's competitive advantages are well understood.  Not as catastrophic as the death of WebVan (holy hell, do I wish they were still around), but up there.  They made a revolutionary product that was awesome... and then the cable companies came along, released horrific DVRs that people casually said, "were just like TiVo!", and that was kinda that.  Beautiful, revolutionary UI, tools that were just this side of magic at the time, and a great user community, all built on open source, to boot.

When the magic smoke finally escapes mine, it'll be a sad day.

Peacock is the only free-$5 you'll want. The other free ones, and the lowest paid tier of Hulu is full of ads. I like Peacock's 5 minutes of ads per hour model.
/Crackle is the absolute worst out of the free ones. 5-9 ads every 15 minutes
\Tubi is second to Peacock with 1-3 ads every 20 minutes.

The question was would you rather pay for another service, or have an ad supported service.  There wasn't the preferred option of not having another service.

Marketers work to get their clients the answers they want, not truth.

I watch the PlutoTV and use the ad time to pee like in the old days. Kids don't know what it's like to be dropping a deuce and have to cut it off because the commercial is almost over.

Also, streaming something from Hulu is more immediate and convenient than looking for interesting content on cable that you can record on a DVR to consume later.

It's the middle choice of ad-supported paid subscription that needs to go.  Either watch it free with ads, or pay for ad-free viewing.  Don't take my money, then say you've created an even more expensive ad-free tier, then start airing commercials on my paid plan.

/Waiting for my DVDs in the mail, but I'm still receiving Christmas cards.

I dropped cable 10 years ago, and didn't realize how bad it had gotten until visiting family lately. I tried to watch a movie on one of the USA/TBS/TNT/TCM alphabet soup channels at my mom's house, and couldn't make it through the whole thing. There were commercial blocks averaging 14 commercials each, every 7-10 minutes of show time. Usually the same 14 commercials in the same order. Every 7-10 minutes... And she's paying $80/mo for the privilege of being subjected to that.

I guess enjoy what we have while it lasts; in another 10 years Netflix is probably going to be $50/mo and full of commercials. And instead of beeping, your microwave is probably going to make you watch ads before unlocking the door when your food's done...

But... sorrrrta, yeah.  Depends on your apples:oranges comparisons.  Compared to the "free" "DVR" that came with cable (once those started flooding the market), yeah.  If you hate yourself, hate decent UIs, enjoy making your interaction with your television unpleasant, etc.  But when they were new?  They were a lot cheaper than rolling your own HD HTPC / server, and you couldn't match their remote+UI UX at any price.

Hell, it's still a lot more pleasant and less frustrating than any of the on-line streaming services, if less robust / expansive.

But they let all that distinction evaporate.  And now, ironically, they're run by a vulture capital group that's trying to make money off the brand that the original company didn't protect well enough to begin with or they'd still be around.


Lol, never trust a company that offers a lifetime subscription to a consumable they serve.

It's the defining trait of a company who will stop serving the moment the revenue slows.

Yup.  And I fully expect them to push an "update" that nukes all the original boxes any day now.  And no, I won't be buying whatever android-with-branding-troweled-on garbage they're pushing now.

It'll be a sad, dark day when they do.  But you can just see it coming.

A real, real shame for all the people who worked hard to create an innovative, industry-changing product.  Not uncommon... still, sad.

This.  Got a cheap TV antenna, and tolerate ads since after the cost of the antenna, it's *free*.

Do I get basic cable with my internet service because "it has ads, but only $40"? No.

If I have to set up a DVR, wait for the show to air, and still fast forward through commercials, I'll stick with Netflix/Prime for that much thanks.
