I'm not sure how you can stretch "Go the F$%# to Sleep!" into a series.

Wet Hot Neighbor by Harry Palms?

/whole-heartedly denies writing pornographic fiction under the pseudonym "Harry Palms"

We already got two miniseries about The Stand, though.

God, didn't we all already read that book in high school? Can't we just move on from the past and get on with our lives?

Already happened, wasn't great..

The Great Gatsby wasn't popular when it was released.  It became popular when the US Army licensed it (and a lot of other books) and sent copies to the GIs overseas.

If it's narrated by Samuel L Jackson, I hope it goes 15 seasons

Vapid consumerism and drama of the trust fund crowd.  Don't we already have the real housewives's shows?

Annnnd, I referenced a movie, and not a TV series. Also, I am sometimes an idiot.

(And it was much better than, if not also much different from the movie, at least)

I will always connect Gatsby with the DiCaprio "cheers" meme.
There's no going back.

I don't know how you stretch that book into a TV series.  It's barely long enough for a movie.

Is this going to be a Downton Abbey thing, with lots of meandering excursions into the love lives and financial scandals of secondary characters?

Oh,

For a second there I thought we were getting a TV show based on IMAJICA by Clive Barker.

Someone wrote a prequel novel about the narrator.

Go ahead and make "The Catcher in the Rye" into a series as well, just so I have two series I won't ever come close to watching.

"Popular with old, hippie high school teachers" does not equal "quality".

But it wouldn't surprise me if they somehow only had the rights to chapters 2, 7 and 8, and couldn't reference characters and events in the rest of the book.

Just goes to show a good script and actors* who understand the material is more important than good FX.

*except the woman who played Trillian, she was terrible

/phun phact: the "computer graphics" in the TV series were actually hand-animated

Ok. But if they do a tv series about the Bible, are we gonna get spinoffs for Book of Mormon and the Quran?

I was hoping this was about The World According to Garp. I know John Irving has been working on a script for a limited series for a few years, but haven't heard what the current status is.

Yeah....let's get rid of all that Shakespeare crap too. Works of art that explore universal and timeless themes have no place in our lives!

Certainly a book about rich people literally getting away with murder, and getting poor people to do their dirty work, has nothing to do with anything happening today.

It actually fell into public domain at the beginning of this year.

/That said, I could almost see some farkery of "Oh, we changed the font on those chapters in 1937, so we get those chapters for another 18 years.

This deserves more funnies. And the sad thing is, I suspect that a few of the funnies it gets will be for the wrong reason and many of the smarts are probably unironically given, as well.

That's what is so maddening to the real fans of Gatsby. We liked it before the US Army licensed it and sent copies to the GIs overseas.

My friends and I already made this movie back in high-school. We'll, it was made for TV movie since we had commercials.

The scene where daisy (?) gets runover by car was replaced by the Robocop scene where the acid vat dude get run over by the police cruiser. It was awsome.

/opening title had a weird al song

Laurie Anderson was going to make a Gravity's Rainbow musical, but Pynchon would only let her do it if all the music was played on Kazoo.

Definitely, it's on the list of books that would have died generations ago, except for high school English teachers.

To be fair, Trillian is a bit of a potted-plant as a character.

America had a real inferiority complex about our art for the longest farking time, we'd just arbitrarily declare random authors "the greatest American author" periodically and throw darts at a wall with their books hung on it to pick what was "the greatest American novel" this month, from about the late 1840s through the late 1940s.

The weirdest part is that our critics never seemed to make any real effort to actually pick the good novels.  Like... Fitzgerald was a perfectly cromulent novelist as it goes, but why would you pick "The Count of Monte Cristo, but Americanized and bowdlerized down to a PG-13 rating" as the stand-out work to artificially signal-boost with military mass-purchases and shoving it into standard curriculums for high schools?  While basically the entire genre of science fiction was right over there having a golden age, even?
