enough doses for nearly every American to get fully inoculated by the end of the summer

The problem is Joe said yesterday "Anybody who wants a vaccine can get one by this spring"

Yeah, but will we get all of it?

I expect McConnell will figure out how to veto this shortly, in the spirit of being the loyal opposition of course.

This is exactly what needs to be done.

I don't understand; how are those two things conflating?  If I draw a venn diagram of those who want the vaccine and nearly every American it isn't a perfect circle

Great, maybe Americans will take half that many doses if you're lucky.

Fingers and toes crossed that it works out and that we can get vaccination figured out instead of the absolute mess we have now.

I'm sure it's a total coincidence that Trumpistan will be suddenly receiving 200 million doses just as the doses that were due to Canada, the EU, the UK, and other places, have been indefinitely delayed due to sudden supply problems.

I haven't been reading up on side effects. Care to share what your symptoms were?

2021-01-26 8:37:43 PM
Granted, it's still January.  Butt my state is still in "1A", which is still long-term-care residents over 75 only, and medical personnel.  They just expanded 1B to more "essential workers" but I am getting the impression that's more police, politicians, and other governnment officials than delivery drivers, postal workers, and store clerks.

Unless something changes, it's still looking like no 4th of July BBQs for 2021 as well.  Ordinary nobodies won't get shiat until Phase 3, and even then how much do you want to be it's a logistical nightmare of 404-ing registration sites, busy phones, and mile-long superspreader queues?

2021-01-26 8:38:06 PM
Scheduled for the 2nd Moderna dose on Thursday. Hoping I don't get too much in they way of side effects since I do have a relatively full patient schedule Friday.

We really need an effective 1-dose vaccine. I've already had my 2nd dose pushed back twice due to supply chain problems. I'm still within the recommended window, but if Thursday doesn't work out I could well be pushed outside that range.

Maybe they just released a study saying right now they don't need to but are looking at just in case.

In my layperson opinion of immunology, whoch I have studied because my immune system is very special, the more this vaccine knocks you on your ass after taking it is a sign you needed it badly or covid would have done worse things to you.

So if you get a reaction like that where you got knocked on your ass for a couple days, its a damn good thing you got it.

It's a nice sentiment, I suppose, but working from home doesn't make this person immune.  Unless they're holing up in the house until it's all over, they're still at risk of catching it.  Presumably the spouse works outside of the home in a higher-risk environment (like health care), and could easily bring home the virus and give it to everyone else in the household despite being vaccinated.

There are anecdotes that if you've had a mild/asymptomatic case of COVID-19, then the immune system response to the vaccine is much stronger (because it's already primed) and it hits you harder.

Note: Anecdote. This is being researched but we don't have solid data. If you are getting the vaccine and get asked about taking part in a study for this (they'll draw some blood to look for antibodies) and report back your symptoms, please take part! This is a very important question, and how important depending on just how strong the response gets.

The suck thing is you probably don't need the second shot. The more suck thing is that's not certain. There's also little data on what the second shot is like for these people. I would assume that it will kick your ass just as hard and be ready for it.

I said exactly the same thing to my dialysis nurses this afternoon. It doesn't really matter how vulnerable I am because I stay home almost all the time now and still get my work done. Give my shot to someone who has to work with the public or a prisoner. It's not like I'm going to be going to the office until everyone else (healthy young people) have their shots and start riding public transport to come in.

I'm scheduled to get my second dose next week. I hope you all are able to get it asap too. I only had a sore arm for 24 hours with the first one. I hear the second one is a little worse, but I'm not worried at all. Worse case scenario I take a sick day the next day and get a long weekend to recover. Much better than the alternative. I'm planning a trip this spring to take advantage of the deals. Life will return to normal everyone! We'll make it through this.

There's a certain contingent that is going to lose their shiat when evidence of Covid vaccination is required for children to attend school.

It could happen as soon as this autumn too. I've no problem with this going from available to mandatory for everyone who doesn't have a documented history of living as a Jehovah's Witness for the past 5 years.

All we need is the supply. I want it legal to require it as a condition of employment.

I am in this boat, too. That said, if it isn't logistically possible to prioritize who receives the shot(s) and when in my area, I'll happily get it once it's available to me. Adoption of the vaccine is important.

They'll do in on initial results, as they did for adults.

Otherwise the risk is too great it'll just pass back & forth among kids until it mutates itself around the vaccines and hits us again.
