How is David Crosby "using the heck out of today"? Making a new album? Patching up relations with his old bandmates?

No?

Oh.

long version:
"If you try that really hard - try to stay positive and try to think about today and the fact that you may die tomorrow, but you've got today So why don't you use the heck out of today? That's a good idea. That's how I see it." - David Crosby

Shortened translation:
YOLO

And no, i never hear "just live just for today/live in the moment" or other version of "being in the now"  as anything other than mist king our simpleton animal existence of nothig more than the moment ever,
anything else but advise to sluff of the challenging efforts of being anything more than an animal.

If you want a life that has considerations beyond the animals, then  you too must ever concern yourself with more than this just the fleeting moments of the moment. If our lives are to amount to more than animals can make of it, then we'll need to be more than just living for the moment as that existence is just intrinsically stuck in the moment.

I mean you don't pretend the bear getting fat for hibernation is doing so on a conscientiously thought out plan do you? you're not pretending that when you get horny it's a demonstration of anything other than being equivalent to a salmon compelled to swim up stream do you?

The moment is where all the animals just naturally exist day in day out.
Is that all you are? Is that all you advise others to try and be?

The guy has pumped out three albums since 2016, is working on the a fourth, toured in 2019, participated in two documentaries (Echo in the Canyon and Remember my Name), and recorded with Playing For Change. He's also reconciled, or tried to reconcile, with many old bandmates. I'll take bets that he's done more in the last 4 years than you 've done in the last 10 and he's pushing 80 with a long list of health problems.

I read the writing on the wall and planned accordingly planting the maximum number of state allowed plants.  We harvested enough White Widow to make enough edibles to last well into next Winter and give a bunch of it away as gifts.

When things get too overwhelming you have a little treat and crash out on the couch and watch Mike/Joel and the 'bots and giggle until you fall asleep.

.....and that's how you get through a pandemic.

I like most of his work and live some of it.

But he is an ass of legendary scale. He was in a band with Stephen Stills And Neil Young and managed to out asshole both of them with one armed tied off for an injection behind his back.

Graham Nash has done a LOT for him, and David managed to trash that relationship by running his mouth and 'living in the moment'.

I do not deny his massive talent, but I would never think about hanging with him. I know he'll be heartbroken to learn that.

I have disagreements with his thoughts on gund. Particularly having them with himself when he is farked up beyond most hunan's understanding. I don't judge often for drug use, but when your habit puts others in direct danger, you should be made to endure consequences.

In fairness, after the aneurism in '96, I've been on bonus time. I was told I wouldn't live three months by a doctor, and that I should get my affairs in order. Then it was six months. Then a year. Then two years. Another doctor quoted five to ten at most-which in fairness in most folks who have aortic aneurisms don't make it that far, because they generally have them in their 60s or 70s-then it was 20 to 25, max.

I stopped listening to the prognosticators on that sh*t, because you can't live your life like that. EVERY day at this point is bonus time. I have a daughter about to turn 20. I'll be 52 this year. I wouldn't have that if I listened to all the folks who told me to just give up. Just sit down and get ready for the Great Beyond or whatever they believed in.

I have had three thoracic surgeries since I turned 20. I've been stabbed. Cut. Burned. Knocked the f*ck out bouncing. I have gotten fevers that should have turned the lights out. Bad things have happened, but you deal with as they come. You deal with them, you treat them, you do the best you can, and you move on. You can't dwell. You can't let fear lock you up from doing any thing. You get locked up with fear, you miss out on life. Good, Bad. Sometimes...meh, but it's a day above ground.

Take precautions. Protect yourself, certainly. Try to live smart and safe. But even if you do everything right, ten out of ten people die. Sometimes improbably. Sometimes entirely predictably, but as someone who's on that bonus time, every day is a gift. It's time to be with the ones you love. To take joy in the small things. Spending time in the park with a sandwich watching the ants do their thing is a gift if you can appreciate your time. Appreciate it. Appreciate those around you. Love them as fierce as you can. Hold them tight. You can't get so caught up about time, so much as appreciate that you have these moments. And they're yours. And the ones you share them with.

Be safe. Be well. But maybe step back from worry that you're not doing ENOUGH and take the time to enjoy these moments. Appreciate the moments. Appreciate the now. Because now, this moment, this very one, is all we have, all we've ever had. And the moments pass into memory, and the ones to come? Who knows, but maybe just appreciate this now.

If you want to make an "asshole rock star documentary" double feature, pair up Crosby's "Remember My Name" with Ginger Baker's "Beware of Mr. Baker". There's a reason that their respective bands were groundbreaking, but never lasted more than a few years: both of them were prodigiously talented, but also just absolutely horrible people.

"Were you to live three thousand years, or even a countless multiple of that, keep in mind that no one ever loses a life other than the one they are living, and no one ever lives a life other than the one they are losing. The longest and the shortest life, then, amount to the same, for the present moment lasts the same for all and is all anyone possesses. No one can lose either the past or the future, for how can someone be deprived of what's not theirs?"

Hey Crosby, screw you and Melissa Ethridge. Yeah, I said it. She wanted your seed because, as she put it, the musical talent gene would be passed on to her child. The fact that she truly believed that stupid fantasy, but tossed out the very real fact that the alcoholic/addict gene wouldn't rear its ugly head means that she was not only selfish, but extraordinarily stupid.

Like that I'll probably die skydiving instead of being hit by a drunk driver or wasting away in a hospital bed.
I suppose this makes me feel as if I had some control over the situation.
At least I'd die doing something.

So 2c fwiw.

Sometimes when running or boxing that Eminem song "Lose yourself" from 8 mile plays. A lot of people really like that song for motivation in the background. The lyrics being all about having your "once in a lifetime" shot and being able to Do The Thing©.

Upon retrospection, I think the song portrays a false narrative of life. Everyone likes the idea of having a big goal, a big challenge, that once in a lifetime thing that will make them special. The truth is *every single thing* you will do today is a "once in a lifetime" event. You will never have today's breakfast again. You will never have today's exercise again. You will never have today's learning time again. You will never have today's interpersonal interactions again.

Literally every moment of your life is Once In A Lifetime. Quit just letting that shiat pass by because you're telling yourself a myth about some epic challenge down the road. See everyday the impermanence around you and celebrate the rarity of what you already have.
