Player asks for trade.  Fans of team are unhappy because knowing player wants a trade reduces potential value of trade for their team.

I'm surprised that they are considering trading him. The lions do not have a very good record when it comes to granting veteran players on the team a trade

Still accurate

FWIW Carlos Monarrez is a hack that is paid to never post a positive 'opinion' about any local team. Every city has at least one.

But as one of the last surviving Lions fans I realize that we are all morons, otherwise we wouldn't still root for the Lions.

I've been researching the teams.  I'm really, really hoping Stafford goes to the Colts.  I could see being a fan of that team very easily.

It would be kind of funny if the Colts become the perpetual "we're just a quality starting QB away" team and every single year they just sign or trade for the "best" mid-30 (or older) veteran QB available because the previous one immediately retires or breaks down after their first season.

Rodgers might be their QB for the 2023-24 season.

Supposedly the rumors are is exactly that, he wants to go to Indy.

/again, rumors so...

You weren't there. You don't know. Maybe it did start that way. The whole "quietly" part would naturally exclude you.

Not only that, but Stafford told the owners (allegedly) before the GM hiring process.  How are you supposed to keep something like that a secret when you are hiring a new GM?  The whole league was going to know anyway.

Come to Washington, Mr. Stafford

That's the sort of blindingly stupid hot take column I'd expect from a Rob Parker.  Or the late Drew Sharp.  Free Press I am disappoint.

The above are probably both correct, and if so, the article is basically saying 'how dare Stafford not lie about his desires when someone other than me asked him about them?"

The article also reads with the following premise: how dare a player express his opinion about his career because it hurts the team he is currently contracted and no longer wishes to play for. HOW SELFISH!!1!one

I am still not sure I understand their plan. or maybe I just can't recall a time when what they are about to do has really worked.

sure they are going to get a couple early round picks, suck very badly and get several more of their own high picks. this year the best pick they get won't land above their own, which still won't get them anything better than the 3rd best QB in the draft. and once stafford is playing for the other team those picks likely go down in value.

then they are going to try to "develop a culture" (whatever that means) while going roughly 10-38 over the next 3 years and hope that they land a rookie QB to carry their shiatty roster and 3rd year head coach that has probably had to fire at least one coordinator.

they are really banking everything on their new GM.

Winston is on a one year deal with the Saints, so the Lions could wait until free agency and sign him then.

Yes, they could.
Being the lions, however, they will probably offer stafford and a couple of draft picks.

I don't think anything will come of it, but apparently AA Ron wants out now.  Indy would be a logical place for him to land that the Packers could stomach.

Yeah about that... Rodgers wants to stay. He said so multiple times. Packers CEO said he wasn't going anywhere. Rumor has it Rodgers wants to redo his contract so he can stay longer.

The Lions and Stafford have never hidden the fact that they're going their separate ways. It's obvious to everyone from any sane angle. That column or article is insane

I'm pretty sure Rodgers comments was his way of saying he wants a new contract.

Carlos is the biggest hack in professional sports writing. This may be the year that the most talent gets turned over in the NFL potentially ever.

Rivers - retired
Brees - needs to retire
Brady - could retire
Big Ben - could retire
AARON - could retire
Alex Smith - could retire
Cam Newton - should retire

There will be plenty of suitors for Stafford's services.

Big Ben and Alex Smith should be in the Brees category

Rivers still was probably a top ten QB.
Brees def was still a top ten QB
Brady still doing well
Ben - probably done
AA Ron still top 5
Alex Smith  Never that great, but still some in the tank
Cam Newton - should have retired after refusing to dive for a ball in the Owl

Stafford is interesting because he could have been one of the greats...maybe.  There are several interesting scenarios.  If Brady wins a 7th ring (he won't) I think he walks away because he proves his point and Stafford would fit there.  He's a fit for Indy and they're close.  San Fran is another option.  Pittsburgh isn't, NO isn't, Washington isn't.  He has possibilities.  It will be something to watch.
