If you combine Lemieux & Probert, smooshed them together into one player, you'd still be nine short of Wayne.

Claude Lemieux is a pussy little biatch. The only time his name and "GOAT" belong in the same sentence is when you're reading a news article about him being caught farking one.

Potentially could've been contended with Gretzky for the GOAT title, but unfortunately health and longevity are a factor, and there's no way around it.

Same reason Patty LaFontaine isn't considered the greatest American player ever.  He was probably the most offensively gifted, and had the best individual statistical seasons, but injuries cut his career short and that's why he's not generally mentioned alongside Modano and Hull and Kane.

how dare Mario Lemieux get cancer, guess Gretzky is just better because he didn't get it

Would someone explain to me, a general sports fan but not a hockey specialist, what could make someone suggest that Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr were better than Gretzky? Is it the influence and longevity? Did Howe bridge eras or modernize the game or something?

I've always understood that Gretzky's skill and individual season / career statistics absolutely dwarfed anyone else who has laced up skates. I thought that GOAT debates were more valid for other sports. Genuinely curious here.

Kinda the same way the Lebron vs Michael arguments go:  Old folks recall how they played and look at the state of the game now with the rule changes between then and now and claim that the Old Dude's stats would be soooooooo much better if they played under the same rules that the FNG is blessed with.

Howe has a hat trick named after him (goal, assist, and fight in same game = Gordie Howe Hat Trick).  Does Gretzky?  Howe scored his goals in a much slower offensive era and,in his later years, with a generally poor Red Wings team (Dead Wing era).

I've never been one to concede GOAT to a numbers comparison. The reason I feel Mario should be higher on the GOAT list was his ability to take over a game all by himself and doing it often. He was incredibly dominant in his day.

Kind of like Lawrence Taylor used to do after crushing a 3 foot long rail of toot.

look at who Gretzky got to play with, and look at who Mario got to play with, in the easiest era in NHL history to score goals

My favorite insane Mario numbers are his last year of juniors, though. 70 games, 133 goals, 149 assists.

One argument for Orr is that he revolutionized the way defensemen played the game. No other defenseman before or since Orr has ever won the Art Ross trophy (most points in a season) - Orr did it TWICE.

Also, Gretzky benefited from major expansion in the league (the NHL went from 17 to 27 teams during his career), and the huge increase in the number of players in the league led to a lowering of the overall talent level he competed against. By contrast, Howe spent the majority of his career in a 6-team league.

The 6-team NHL Gordie Howe played in wasn't that great. The talent pool was really tiny.

I find it fascinating how INSANELY dominant he was over such a short period of time.

He lost a year to back injuries, a year or so to cancer, 3 years to retirement, and 2 years at the end to hip injuries.  He ended his career with 690 career goals.  He had 600 before he retired the first time in 1997, barely 30 years old.  Truly insane.

Crosby passed Lemieux's games played like 2 years ago.

Naturally gifted sports prodigies always make terrible coaches.  To be a coach you have to be able to explain and communicate ideas and principles and strategies of the game.  But players like Gretzky are never able to explain what makes them great.  It just all came naturally to them.  Intuitively.  But not in a way they would ever be able to articulate and impart to other players.

The best coaches are always some journeyman 4th liner, maybe had a cup of coffee in the pros, maybe not, but who had to study the hell out of the game to get as far as they got.  The couldn't just get by on talent - those are the guys who understand the game the best and can communicate that to other players as a coach.
