t3knomanser: Mad_Radhu: although we did get a Neil Gaiman episode as part of the filler

An episode which might be the worst of the series, which isn't precisely Gaiman's fault- it's just a complete tonal shift from the rest of the show, but not in an interesting way, and plus it's saddled with celebrity guest stars doing a weird riff on their real-world personas. It's a weird historical curiosity.

Alphax: I still have the entire series on regular DVD.. and threw out the old VHS recording I'd made off the air.  I haven't had much desire to rewatch in a while, because I remember everything so well still.

When I can still rattle off early season episode names in order, yeah, I invested a lot of time and energy in the show back in the day.

IIRC, there was a B5 message board drinking game where one of the qualifiers was "If they awkwardly shoehorn the title into the dialogue, finish your drink."

/distinctly remembered that the week "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place" aired

A space station in neutral territory?

A male captain, female xo, minority doctor?

An alien leader named Dukat (killed before present in B5)?

Powerful ancient races pulling the strings?

I don't know what you're talking about.

In Valen's name...what a savings.

I am beyond excited about this. This was my favorite show growing up and it still holds up. (Except for the parts of the show that I choose to find charming because it was the 90's and they had no money.) But what does hold up are the political allegories that are far too prophetic these days. It's like the other 90's series Dinosaurs, which was satirical in the 90's and is too accurate these days for comfort.

It's a shame this news came out just days after Mira Furlan's passing. 2021 is giving me such whiplash.

In gaming, modders have made great strides using machine learning tools to create high resolution textures from the original low res textures. I bet they could use the same techniques to create high definition CGI special effects scenes just from the original fx with no need to do extra costly work making new models or textures. Just look at the improvement this 4.6gb high res texture pack for Dragon Age Origins makes:

t3knomanser: FarkingChas: I do not remember if B5 was native 16x9. Is this just another worthless 4x3 blown up to 16x9 conversion? Where we lose the entire top and bottom of the original screen?

This is discussed in detail in the article, but this is HD scans of the film negatives, but it retains the 4:3 crop (because the CGI sequences were never on film, and thus have to be upscaled).

madgonad:
The acting was filmed (on film) at 16:9. The graphics were created on a Amiga 3000s at 4:3. That's why the DVDs look like crap. They are in 16:9 so the CGI scenes were distorted from converting from 4:3 to 16:9.

Thanks. I am not interested enough to read the article. I do not want to rewatch the series again. Too many "good" scenes will be ruined by seeing them as they really were. Not the new version that I have created in my imagination that made them better.
Like that hot Lyta/ivanova action when Lyta needed cheering up.

Once you get past the Byron arc, it's actually not that bad. It's not as good as seasons two through four, but it's not bad.

My complaints were more to do with the cast changes and dumping Claudia.

Yeah, casting Scoggins wasn't a smart move. The woman might be easy on the eyes but she couldn't pull off commander of a Mini Cooper never mind a space station.

You know, I know some of you guys really love  Moore's BSG and I can understand the reasons why (I was on board for a while) but it is not an experience I want to revisit ever again. It became a chore and emotionally grinding waaaaay before that jacked-up ending that pissed people off.

I would say it does. If I were to.make one complaint it would be regarding the treatment of the telepaths. That aspect of the story never felt right to me.

Because they were controlled, or not controlled enough?

Because I feel they never got closure. Also they treated Lyta like shiat and by "they" I mean the good guys.

It's a investment in time. The first season or two is character development and 'meh' stand alone story episodes. lines.....then it pulls it all together by season 3. And basically pulls out and goes limp at the last season.

Season 5 is proof that there is nothing that studio execs can't f*ck up

Ahh..Nope. JMS said from the get go on the usenet groups that he had a vision of ending at season 4 (or  3?) and that would be it. Right at the closure of 'the rock called out' and head on spike.
Then PTEN pulled up a truck of money and he said "well fark it...we can change our minds"

That couldn't be helped, PTEN fell apart before they could finish the series, so they scrambled to finish the show before the lights got turned off.  Then TNT picked them up and they had to throw a story together.

I saw it for the first time a few years ago. The production is dated. Even by 90s standard it was low budget. But the story was decent and there are a few good acting performances that made it worthwhile.
