madgonad: I watched the series in the 90s.
I bought the DVDs.
I bought the improved 4:3 version on Vudu.
.
.
.
And now I'm going to spring another $150 to buy the remastered versions.

/JMS went to the George Lucas school of milking your nerds

JMS hasn't owned the rights to the show since it ended.  He doesn't even get residuals for it.  He's pointed this out many times, and it's yet another reason why he has told people he's not interested in rebooting or updating the show.

He legally can't, or Warner will sue him into the next millennium.

Garza and the Supermutants: Oh thank God, I still have several mint condition Babylon 5 trading card starter packs to unload, and they're worth bupkis atm.

The CCG?  I still have my collection somewhere, under the Decipher Star Wars stuff.

GardenWeasel: Bslim: I thought the version I watched on Prime back in 2019 was a remaster.

I think that was just modified for widescreen

Correct. The Prime version was terrible. I tried to watch it and went straight back to 4:3 dvd rips it was so badly done.

I'm excited about a proper remaster. Don't care if it's not 16:9

Herr Flick's Revenge: iTunes has "box set" sales frequently.
I purchased the entire run of Magnum PI for $35, Strike Back for something like $50.

Ah, that might explain it. I very rarely even browse iTunes, much less buy stuff from it, so this is something I wouldn't be aware of.

Still in the plastic wrap.

madgonad: FarkingChas: I do not remember if B5 was native 16x9. Is this just another worthless 4x3 blown up to 16x9 conversion? Where we lose the entire top and bottom of the original screen?

The acting was filmed (on film) at 16:9. The graphics were created on a Amiga 3000s at 4:3. That's why the DVDs look like crap. They are in 16:9 so the CGI scenes were distorted from converting from 4:3 to 16:9.

It was filmed on "Super 35" and framed so that it could be cropped to either 4:3 for the original broadcasts or 16:9 for future releases.

There were early plans for Delenn to be a MALE Minbari who became female when she became partly human.. but they were dropped.  Unlikely they could have kept the secret up, and Mira wasn't a fan of the idea.

CSB: In the first season of the show, the local TV announcer wasn't too respectful.  'And now, bad hair and all, it's Babylon 5!'  Week after week.

I complained once about this on Usenet.. I did not notice any direct reply to me online, but the announcer got a LOT more respectful after that!  Especially the first week.  Someone got chewed out, hard.

gilgigamesh: I never watched this series. Maybe I will. Does it hold up after 20 years?

It holds up waaayy to much with, say, US politics of thepast 4 years than anyone should be comfortale with. Hell there's even an episode of a Religious species being wiped out completely by a plague because they believed having the disease was a sign of being impure, so everyone hid it and the gov all info about it not to be released whatsoever.

After the last 4 years IRL?  Way too much.

There's even a pandemic episode.

Episode? There is an entire series about searching for a cure.

We don't talk about that.

Invisible Obama: gilgigamesh: I never watched this series. Maybe I will. Does it hold up after 20 years?

Yes.

A good story overall, still stands up well a quarter-century later.

The special effects are just a tad dated, but they were done on a shoestring budget in the 90's so it's understandable, it's amazing they could do that back then (even if any random home computer could make better graphics now).

There's a reason we've been using the "Babylon 5 is NOT an instruction manual" meme. . .some parts, especially the whole plot arc with President Clark and a fascist takeover of EarthGov seemed rather prescient.

Not to mention the other arc with a bat-shiat insane dictator propped up by foreign powers working in the shadows (no pun intended) through weak, opportunistic politically-connected figures.

Actually I'm having a hard time deciding if our current circumstances apes Earth or Centauri Prime more.

/ and there's even a connection between the MAGAts and the Drakh.
// wish we could have more - there are so many other tangents I'd like to see (incl. Crusade - what's been revealed post-production as to where the story line was headed was interesting).

ursomniac: and there's even a connection between the MAGAts and the Drakh

Curious what you think that is.

The Keepers, somehow? The fact that the "associates" of the Shadows did XXXXXXXX after XXXXXXXXXX (spoilers)?

Different franchise, but I feel like MAGAts are the Pakleds. They look for things, for things to make America great again."

optikeye: JMS said from the get go on the usenet groups that he had a vision of ending at season 4 (or  3?)

Where did you drag up that? It has always been said and repeated to death that it was a 5 year story arc.

netizencain: Couldnt someone take The Last Starfighter and redo all of the CGI.  Leave all the acting scenes untouched, just replace every single CGI shot?

Nope just leave it alone or remake the whole thing. Rewatching it will hurt your childhood memories.

Nonrepeating Rotating Binary: browneye: I thought this was about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

A space station in neutral territory?

A male captain, female xo, minority doctor?

An alien leader named Dukat (killed before present in B5)?

Powerful ancient races pulling the strings?

I don't know what you're talking about.

B5 was conceived of first.

Got through all the comments and not one mention of Harlan Ellison as a psi-cop, or that Walter Koenig's character was named 'Alfred Bester.'

Ellison was a 'conceptual consultant' as well.

He was a pretty litigious guy. Best get him on the (tiny) payroll.

Yeah...I wonder what he would have done with Tom Holland's new movie. "Chaos Walking"
About a guy who needs to donate his DNA to save the human species after a nuclear war, and his telepathic dog.

Yeah. Ellison wouldn't have a problem with that. (g)

Heck he sued about "The Terminator" because it featured a time traveling robot 'cop'. As derivative of one of his twilight zone scripts. One of the settlement was not to mention the price....Ellison bought a bill board.
"I won...I call you how much...But I can afford this Billboard"

JMS pitched B5 to some Paramount executives, who did not pick up the series. Then a little while later those executives spontaneously came up with the idea for DS9.

Now Crusade vs. Star Blazers...
