I wish this would have been announced prior to Mira's death. It feels a little creepy now like they are riding the news.

I think that was just modified for widescreen

I missed that news, went back and looked.  West Nile virus? I feel like the cast was cirsed or something.

I mean, sure, but these kinds of announcements are churning through the media pipeline weeks in advance.

I loved that B5 at least attempted to show space physics with the Starfury compared to all the other Sci-Fi on at the time.

Bslim: I thought the version I watched on Prime back in 2019 was a remaster.

That was basically the DVD version, which remastered it to widescreen but at the cost of making the CGI sequences look like utter crap. With this version, they rescanned the film negative but kept the original 4:3 aspect ratio so they could upscale the CGI more cleanly.

Maybe if this gets enough eyeballs on HBO Max they'll spring for redone special effects sequences. You could probably redo it all in Unreal Engine these days if you needed it redone relatively fast and cheap, and it would still look a lot better.

Agreed, I like to poke fun at it, though.

I'm in a rewatch of it right now, too. I think I'll skip season 1 next time.

I would say it does. If I were to.make one complaint it would be regarding the treatment of the telepaths. That aspect of the story never felt right to me.

The story does. Frighteningly close to real life at times.

Don't get thrown by the graphics, esp the 1st season. It was the 90s, and the series was rendered on a Amiga.

In Valen's name...what a savings.

I am beyond excited about this. This was my favorite show growing up and it still holds up. (Except for the parts of the show that I choose to find charming because it was the 90's and they had no money.) But what does hold up are the political allegories that are far too prophetic these days. It's like the other 90's series Dinosaurs, which was satirical in the 90's and is too accurate these days for comfort.

It's a shame this news came out just days after Mira Furlan's passing. 2021 is giving me such whiplash.

I saw it for the first time a few years ago. The production is dated. Even by 90s standard it was low budget. But the story was decent and there are a few good acting performances that made it worthwhile.

I heard/read somewhere in the past year that it's being done with at least a few episodes (to show what could be done/test the waters to see if there would be money there).  So maybe in the future...

They shot the series in widescreen. But cropped it to 4:3 for broadcast release. The CGI was 4:3 from the start so that kinda screwed up the flow if you get the wide screen.
Also, the CGI was mostly done on a Amega using 'video toaster'. http://www.generationamiga.com/2020/08/30/how-24-commodore-amiga-2000s-created-babylon-5/

Good writing, and good characterization, are timeless.

Plus, the show enjoys asking profound questions, and speculating that there may be multiple answers.

CGI may come and go, but this saga, I predict, will prove to be a classic.

It's a investment in time. The first season or two is character development and 'meh' stand alone story episodes. lines.....then it pulls it all together by season 3. And basically pulls out and goes limp at the last season.

That couldn't be helped, PTEN fell apart before they could finish the series, so they scrambled to finish the show before the lights got turned off.  Then TNT picked them up and they had to throw a story together.

Every time I hear rumblings of a B5 reboot I always think the original series holds up just fine, the show that needs to get its full story is Crusade.

Ahh..Nope. JMS said from the get go on the usenet groups that he had a vision of ending at season 4 (or  3?) and that would be it. Right at the closure of 'the rock called out' and head on spike.
Then PTEN pulled up a truck of money and he said "well fark it...we can change our minds"

You know, I know some of you guys really love  Moore's BSG and I can understand the reasons why (I was on board for a while) but it is not an experience I want to revisit ever again. It became a chore and emotionally grinding waaaaay before that jacked-up ending that pissed people off.

Once you get past the Byron arc, it's actually not that bad. It's not as good as seasons two through four, but it's not bad.

Wheee did you hear that? JMS always had a 5 year plan for the show. Season 4 was originally going to have more of the Earth Civil war, ending with the cliffhanger of Sheridan being captured and tortured.

When PTEN went under, the ending of the Earth Civil War was collapsed into that season and they even shot the series finale as the last episode of season 4. When TNT gave them a chance to do Season 5, they shot a replacement season finale and added the telepath storyline and a few extra filler episodes to pad out season 5 (although we did get a Neil Gaiman episode as part of the filler), which was originally going to cover the ending of the Earth Civil War, the founding of the Interstellar Alliance, and Fall of Centauri Prime.

I think that's probably what threw me off originally. I'm pretty sure I tried watching an episode or two, and it just never clicked despite the fact that I'm a huge scifi fan.

Oddly enough I'm much more forgiving now of bad fx, as long as the story's decent.
