I'd also put in a word for Andruw Jones. Maybe the tail end of his career was pretty poor but he was the best center fielder in the majors for a decade.

another one I was surprised is so low. I figured his defense made him a shoo-in.

I'm fine with not having seditionists and scam artists in the HOF.  I'm fine with not having a HOF at all, seems rather pointless to me, if you know the game you know the great players.

2021-01-26 10:39:03 AM
Put Bonds and Clemens in.  Ty Cobb beat a black guy almost to death.  Gaylord Perry cheated his entire career.  Ted Williams introduced amphetamines to the clubhouse when he brought Dexedrine back from WW2, and everybody in baseball used amphetamines from then until they were replaced with ritalin and adderall.

Oh, they're too big of assholes?  Steve Carlton refused to talk to the media for a decade.  Mickey Mantle cheated on his wife and brought his mistress to his HOF ceremony.  Willie McCovey and Duke Snider cheated on their income taxes.

"Yeah, but it was different back then."  Chipper Jones took greenies his entire career.  Roberto Alomar's wife took out restraining orders against him.

All your heroes have feet of clay.  No one can deny that Bonds and Clemens are famous for playing baseball.  Put 'em in.

2021-01-26 11:01:16 AM
Also, the guy who oversaw and enabled everything Bonds and Clemens and everyone else did or didn't do or was rumored to have done, Bud Selig, is in.

Ted Williams was famous in his battles with sports press.  Eddie Murray basically ignored them and got in on his first ballot.  If you are on the bubble, then your image and relationship with the writers matters.

i think bonds is in the clear.

Why? He seemed to be well on his way to the HOF in the early 2000s and then spent a decade as an average  player. He's basically a less consistent Don Mattingly.

I'd vote for Scott Rolen and probably Andruw Jones.

Don Mattingly career WAR: 42.4

ElwoodCuse: Todd Helton career WAR: 61.8
Don Mattingly career WAR: 42.4

Fangraphs is better than BBR. Helton's career fWAR is 54.9, and was about 44 before he settled in as an average or below-average player for another eight or nine years. Normally a player needs about 60 fWAR to be in the HOF conversation (Dick Allen/Darrell Evans/Bobby Abreu levels), 65 to be a solid case (Edgar Martinez/Dwight Evans/Tony Gwynn), 70 to be compelling (Scott Rolen/Gary Carter/Miguel Cabrera). Postseason heroics are worth a small bump. Helton's neighbors on the career list include the likes of Brian Giles and Norm Cash. OK, he's better than Mattingly, an off-the-top-of-my-head comp. Still not a HOFer.

Only if Rose goes in as well.     either all unsavory hall worthy players get in or none in my eyes and honestly i view steroid worse than Rose's gambling on baseball.

There is a black and white rule posted in every MLB clubhouse that if you bet on a baseball game in which you have a duty to perform, you are permanently ineligible.

It is absolutely not the same thing, or worse.

I don't think it is so much a matter of being a good person as it is cheating and/or gambling. Carlton is by all accounts an asshole but I don't know anyone saying he should be kicked out. But Bonds and Clemons are out for cheating and Rose for gambling. In their cases, the conduct in question was directly related to the game.

Also, Cobb probably didn't do most of the horrible things attributed to him. He even spoke up in favor of integration.

2021-01-26 1:05:43 PM
Also, according to TFA, voters are more swayed by traditional stats than fancy new (and more useful) stats like WAR. One would think baseball writer would be all over the new stats but apparently one would be wrong.

Bonds and Clemens not being in is an extrajudicial punishment handed down by moralizing sportswriters, not an actual judgment from MLB or the Hall of Fame.

Sorta. Rose is banned from baseball so he is ineligible for the Hall. The others are out because of the 'character' and 'sportsmanship' clauses. Voters can't do anything about the ineligible list; they use their judgment on the character and sportsmanship stuff. But the writers are supposed to moralize.

That's not what you said. You said they are "out" because of cheating. That's a debate, and a silly one considering how many cheats are in the hall. But they are still on the ballot. Rose isn't and never will be.

Not he precisely the same thing no.    Rose on field legacy is all him and not the product of chemical enhancement beyond perhaps amphetamines' which mere kept a player going longer.

Bond and Clemons extended their careers. As Ken Griffey, Jr. faded, these two began setting impossible records at advanced ages, defying logic.

Want to know what Bonds would be without the clear? Bobby Bonilla.

And Clemons' B.S. run around Congress to whip support for himself was the perfect epitome. His career would have been shorter and he'd be in the Hall.

And can't remember: was Pettitte clean or drugged?

If we assume that Bonds didn't start using until after the McGwire-Sosa HR chase, which is what most people say, then he was already HOF-worthy before that point.

Clemens, though... I don't think we can say that as confidently about him. He appeared to be in serious decline in the mid-90s, before he moved on to Toronto and suddenly bounced back into dominance.

But seriously, how the hell does Billy Wagner get half the vote?

"Well, he never led the league in anything, was never the league's best closer, played a fake position that pretty much any decent pitcher can succeed in, and his only big moments were getting absolutely shelled in the postseason...definitely put him in."

well it is official no one got in and Shilling asked to be taken off next years ballot so that the veterans committee gets top decide if he is in our not.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/no-one-was-voted-into-the-baseball-hall-of-fame-this-year-232146550.html

Shilling had this to say:

"I will not participate in the final year of voting. I am requesting to be removed from the ballot. I'll defer to the veterans committee and men whose opinions actually matter and who are in a position to actually judge a player. I don't think I'm a hall of famer as I've often stated but if former players think I am then I'll accept that with honor."
.
"I've certainly been exposed to racism and sexism and homophobia as it's part of who human beings are. I've played with and talked with gay teammates. I've played with wife beaters, adulterers, assaulted, drug addicts and alcoholics. I've never hit a woman, driven drunk, done drugs, PEDs or otherwise, assaulted anyone or committed any sort of crime. But I'm now somehow in a conversation with two men who cheated, and instead of being accountable they chose to destroy others lives to protect their lie. I will always have one thing they will forever chase. A legacy. Whatever mine is as a player it will be the truth, and one I earned for better or worse."

Again, he's a Trumper, so of course he's, in one comment, saying that of course he's not in, that the voters' opinions don't matter, that everyone else he played with is terrible, bit that he's pure as the driven snow. That oh, I don't think I'm a Hall of Famer, but anyone who doesn't elect me is illegitimate.

I hope the Veterans Committee never lets him in, either, if only so he can rant about how their opinions don't matter, either. Maybe he'll try to start his own Hall of Fame.
