Tweaker.

I had a conversation with someone on TFD concerning tweakers and he said,
"I never know what he'll do next..."

I told him "He doesn't know what he'll do next!"

Possibly a deliberate attack than just a hit and run/drunk driving accident

Not any doubt. The victims were many blocks apart. The first victim (I think) was a woman in her 70s. He hit her once then backed up to hit her again. Going to be interesing to find out what his deal is.

It's the northwest where a black guy mowed down a bunch of Black Lives Matter protesters on the freeway with his car and the media just let it go.

patcarew: Probably a self driving car.

Christ, after looking at autocorrect farking up everbody's communications for the last 30 years,

this is exactly what I expect self driving cars to look like. YMMV.

Actually, that's not a very accurate comparison.  Autocorrect in any form violates one of the core precepts of software design:  never attempt to make a decision for the user, or to guess what the user wants.  Any time you generate input instead of letting the user provide it, you're making decisions for them, and you're so likely to be wrong often enough to notice that it's always bad design.  Or, at least, worse than just asking for input.

That said, Autocorrect straddles the fence on that one by at least permitting user confirmation.  It's just the interface for doing so is poor enough that we're all just typing away, ignoring or missing the nonsense confirmations and what we think we're typing doesn't show up on the device.  Or being annoyed at constantly having to correct the autocorrect if you do notice.  YMMV there, at least.

Self-driving cars are a different problem.  Safe driving is pretty well-defined in terms of physical parameters.  Don't hit other cars, stay in your lane, follow GPS directions, etc.  They had cars that could travel highways within months of getting started.  The problem there is what we call "edge cases".  Rare but important deviations from the norm.  Like the white shoulder stripe that's worn away at the curve of someone's rural road or driveway, but present everywhere else, or a cyclist riding against traffic instead of with it.

It may be that self-driving cars are impossible in the end, since the sheer amount of vehicles, pedestrians, and roads guarantee that edge cases nation-wide are pretty numerous, even if your vehicle may not encounter one daily.  The other question is whether it can lower traffic accident fatality rates below what human drivers produce... and can we accept a higher-than-0% fatality rate from a machine even if it's lower than letting humans drive?

No. An Element, Honda's failed concept car last produced ten years ago. Barely even had navigation. Portland, so I'm guessing driver pulled a Dude Lebowski after dropping his joint ash on his crotch.

I love my big clangy Element. 15 years old and it hasn't given me any trouble.

Fara Clark: I thought it was funny that one of the guys that helped keep him corralled till the cops got there, was also telling the cops to "fark him up". Didnt they just have a bunch of protests against that thing?

/even after being dog piled by the cops he wasn't handcuffed till they tased him.

Yeah, I didn't think that was a good look either.

THIS TIME.

15-to-life, per offense.  Anyone who does this should be an object lesson to everyone else contemplating it.  That includes the cops.
