... and normally, they're specific wasp-fig pairings, but they found, on an island with multiple non-native fig types, some fig pollinators pollinating figs they don't usually pollinate. Which is kinda cool, but subby seems very hung up about the potential wasps in his newtons.

FTA:

When the young wasps emerge from their eggs, the males come first. They're wingless and scrawny, but they chew through the fig's outer wall to free their sisters, whom they also impregnate.

Hear that, internet porn sites? Nature was way ahead of you.

/Seriously though, I'm a bit puzzled by this. How do you ever get generic diversity this way?

By telling your doctor that insurance won't cover brand name diversity, so if they could prescribe the generic stuff it'll help out?

hear that radical vegans? NO figs for you! too much wasp death within them!

-i jest, of course, the wasps and figs have been doing this dance for literal millenniums...no human intentions ever involved.....

but still, dare you nosh on some figs?

Which is why my vegan friend won't touch fig newton's but apparently oreos are.

Cultivated figs are parthenogenic and have no need of pollinators.

I'm just going to pretend I didn't read that, and go back to enjoying fig newtons.

If you want a real horror story, read about grapefruit.  (protip: if you drink or take any medication, *DO NOT* *EVER* consume grapefruit or its juice)

I know a vegan who refuses to eat figs because of wasps are animals.

Planting four fig trees this spring.  We had three types at the prior place and my wife found a late season fig to add to the group: Brown Turkey, Desert King, Oregon Prolific, and Excel.

Having never tasted Excel, she bought it because she's an Excel spreadsheet expert.

That's because the female fig wasp orgasm is a myth.

You don't notice any dead wasps inside your figs because figs produce an enzyme that breaks wasps down into a protein soup that the growing fig uses as nutrients so they're plump and juicy when ripe. It's like pre-digested wasp for your fig-eating enjoyment.

If you eat chocolate covered cherries with the goopy liquid inside them, the candy makers  coat a cherry with a sugar paste shell that hardens when it's dried. They cover that in chocolate. The water in the chocolate coating activates an enzyme in the sugar shell that breaks it down into a liquid.

While I do like Fig Newtons, figs are gross. Had a fig tree in the back yard of a house I lived in once. Between the stench of the rotting figs and the constant buzzing of the wasps, I was so glad when we moved out of there.

Not as gross as it sounds at all.  In wasp pollinated figs the wasps can only lay eggs in the male figs, and all the male figs are inundated with eggs and eventually larvae which devour the fruit from the inside out.  As such they are completely inedible.

The only figs that are edible are the female figs, which don't have the structures inside for the female wasps to lay their eggs in.  So in effect they all had a single female wasp that went inside to pollinate it, eventually died without laying eggs, then was absorbed by enzymes within the fruit.  So one (former) wasp and no eggs, and by the way, fig wasps are tiny.

Oh, and any vegan that refuses to eat figs should feel the same way about any plant that was in any way fertilized with decomposing animal matter.  So you know, all the plants.

Yep. Grapefruit + MAO inhibitors = Halcion Hell.
