Or, to look at it another way, Australians go through an average of 31 periods of sobriety a year.

Came to say this.

CSB

I once drank at a bar with a large contingent of Russians and Aussies trying to outdrink each other. By closing time even the help was inebriated and calling for rides home.

A sure sign of alcoholism is to rigidly control your drinking so that you only drink one month a year, for the whole month.

Why would you get drunk in a place where everything is out to get ya?!

/been there twice
//funnily enough I went exploring around and got to hiking up a hill when I noticed actual kangaroos. A couple were just staring at me and I figured it was a great time to head back. Told my Aussie friend and he said "good call. It's rutting season. That male would have probably attacked you"

That's a good question as one would assume that the booze would be able to kill you quickly as well.

Or more likely, "Define 'drunk'."

Well, I can be paranoid and terrified of everything trying to kill me or I can be drunkenly confident I can handle anything that comes my way.

Or just so wasted I can't tell which feet are mine and therefore, I do not care.

The more interesting figure there is that apparently 15% of folks use "the darknet" to score drugs.

That's either a very interesting / select sample they got, or I'm highly skeptical of that assertion.

Yeah, but they're not just getting drunk, they're getting "Australian Drunk".

Whole different level of drunk.

Most Australians live in a few large Metropolitan cities, which have relatively few of the bads. The Outback is a whole bother story.

Don't know about there but in New Orleans we have alcohol in every grocery and convenience store as well no mandated closing time.   First time I encountered that concept in Baton Rouge, I wondered what idiot would close a business so early. (2:00 am)

Years ago, I came across some Bible belters walking up Canal St above the French Quarter.  There were looking for a "package store"  I pointed out the half dozen shops they had walked by already.

Also  Drive through Daiquiri shops.    They sort of make sense when you see a 32 oz drink, and the normal rule is drink THEN drive.   Wouldn't it make more sense to start home with something that large?   I know, someone would just keep driving back for another.

I am certain I will be drunk at least 31 times next month.

2021-01-25 1:31:05 PM
Hmmm depends on age. Those are rookie numbers in college. You should hit 31 by October. Hell there were days I was drunk 3x in the same day. You know the kegs and eggs, nap, day drink, nap, night rally. These days, I'm probably drunk 10-12 times a year max. Not that I'm not drinking every day (god knows I like to drink). Just I'm not a lightweight and it's a lot of work and calories; plus I'm not bringing home cases of Natty ice anymore like my teens or early 20's, or going out to a bar and dropping $100-200 in a night 3-4x a week like in my 30's. Craft 4 packs are like $15-20, I'm a cheep ass adult now, that's a lot of money.

First time I worked in Louisiana I got a laugh at the drive thru daiquiri shops, then amazed at lunch time the line of cars at said shops.

Montana though people get drunk at the bar, and buy a bottle of liquor to go.

Most people don't drink, but the top 10% of drinkers make up most of the drinking you see. This data is from the US, but similar patterns occur elsewhere.

When it comes to per capita consumption, Australia doesn't even break into the top 20. Most are European countries.

Does light beer count as a full drink, or is it calculated as being only 2/3 of a drink?

I have never been that level of drunk from alcohol. I have, however, occasionally eaten the second half of a brownie too soon at a concert, and decided I had to sit down while I could still figure out where the ground was, but even that's only been once or twice in my life.

Back in the early 80's I went to Ensenada for a weekend trip.  3 of us guys showed up in a hotel room with 2 beds, I don't remember if Ken or Mike (I think it was Ken but wouldn't put money on it) lost but I got a bed to myself.

Irrelevant but fun fact.

Friday night, we're in a bar drinking.  Suddenly this group of Aussies shows up, buying everyone drinks and singing the dirtiest, funniest songs we'd ever heard.  I don't think I've ever laughed so hard, and the drinks were free.

Walking back to our hotel room we ran across one of the Aussies.  He stood on that raised concrete thing that bridges have, pulled it out, and pissed on cars passing below.  A cop shows up.  Aussie starts singing "Aye Aye Aye, I'm the Frito Bandito!"  Cop speaking mexican to no-one in the area who understands mexican is presumably telling the aussie to put little willie to bed.

The 3 of us ambled back to our hotel room, no clue what happened to the Aussie.

/ oh, the bed thing?  The loser slept on the floor.
// found out the next day the aussies were from a cargo ship, that left the next day
/// um, I need to think of something else?  Um...  I wish I could still get drunk on 3 beers.  Hows that?
