I feel the same way I did after watching the first Pacific Rim trailer. Who needs stars? Who needs plot? Just give me giant monsters fighting in all the most awesome ways and I'm happy.

But theaters? Really?

Just how many variations to this tired trope will Hollywood throw millions into? Godzilla was fun back when I was a kid in the 1970s, when the creature was played by some guy in a Godzilla suit. Back then, the story line was fine. Now, it's just...pathetic.

Remember when you were a kid and you saw adults around you who were angry and depressed and unable to enjoy things and you said to yourself - that won't be me. Well, you failed.

... what the hell? They're all over the place for scale. Kong, from "Kong: Skull Island", is 104 feet tall. Godzilla, per "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", is 393 feet tall. The biggest aircraft carrier we have is the USS Gerald R. Ford, at 1,106 feet long.  Yet they're standing TOGETHER, at the SAME HEIGHT, on an aircraft carrier that's clearly about 3 times the length of Godzilla, and it's still AFLOAT?

Just... no. Fark, no.

21 seconds into the trailer, he's sitting behind two winches, next to shipping containers and people. He sure as hell isn't 390 feet tall in that shot.

So, when did he nearly quadruple in size?

Seriously, two shipping containers, stacked one atop another, is just under 16 feet - they're typically 7'10" tall.

So, unless he's about 300 friggin' yards away, he's nowhere near tall enough in that shot to justify that stupid "two assholes fighting on the deck of an aircraft carrier made of aerogel" shot.

7'10" tall inside - their outside dimensions are 8'6" in height, typically, so that would make that 17' tall when stacked. Assuming the ratios of a gorilla still hold true for Kong, Kong would be about 250 tall seated (a gorilla's legs account for only about a third of their standing height) - he is not 14 times taller, seated, than the containers in that shot.

Those who dislike it tend to dislike it for that reason. I like it for that reason. It builds toward the final battle where we finally see Godzilla go ham on the other MUTOs. Also, it helps emphasize the human perspective on these monsters.

KONG advantage: speed, intelligence, upper body strength, hands with opposable thumbs, can make and use crude weapons
GODZILLA advantage: immense lower body strength and tail, can stay underwater for hours, tough scaly nearly impenetrable skin, atomic breath

Kong would be better close in as long as he avoids the atomic breath. Godzilla is better at distance.
Should be a good fight.

FormlessOne: FormlessOne: Seriously, two shipping containers, stacked one atop another, is just under 16 feet - they're typically 7'10" tall.

I just realized they are totally telegraphing the "they have to get kong because Godzilla alone isn't enough to stop XXXXXXX"

leviosaurus: It looks like fun, and I will definitely watch it.

But I'm not kidding myself into thinking this is anything other than a really expensive cartoon. I can unequivocally state that I will enjoy the movie a lot more when someone makes a supercut that removes all the dialog.

The original movie this is an updated-special-effects remake of was exactly a really expensive cartoon, and it frankly had very little dialogue to begin with, basically just some technobabble exposition to justify WTF Kong and Godzilla were both a thing in the context of the film then a whole buncha fightin'.

... it was pretty awesome, even with the special effects being entirely rubber-suit and miniatures-based.

// If this fails it'll be because they try to make it into a "real" movie, which is to say a narrative-driven feature with human characters having complete emotional and character arcs.  That's worked in precisely one Godzilla movie in the entirety of world history: the original Godzilla.  It has never, ever resulted in anything but an abject failure since then, and only the films where they realize they're a monster movie and make the movie entirely about the monsters with the humans only around for context have these ever functioned properly.

I honestly think this would be a FANTASTIC movie if they did it without any dialog whatsoever. Just show it from the perspective of the monsters - the humans are still there, but they're just running around the monster's feet yelling indecipherably. Kong gets captured, is dragged to where Godzilla is, they see each other and go at it.

They can even keep this subplot of "There was a war long ago and they are the last two left" but tell the story visually. It'd be great. It would have all the building-stomping fun of a monster movie, but with the visual storytelling of an arthouse flick. It'd win Oscars.

I think it looks awesome. Yes, Kong is Godzilla's size now. Kong: Skull Island took place decades ago, and they made it clear that Kong was juvenile then and still growing. Here he is, grown more, and clearly one of the great Titans of Earth.

I'm going to call it and say that the Godzilla he fights turns out to be Mechagodzilla, and the real Godzilla shows up and they team up to beat him. That's my solid guess, but who knows? They might surprise me.

Anyway, if you haven't seen Skull Island you owe it to yourself to check it out. If not for the kaiju/titan action then for the fact that the movie features so many actors from the MCU that it's rather remarkable. Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, Tom Hiddleston... It's fun to see them all together in this film. But it's also a damned good Kong movie that ISN'T a remake of King Kong.

Sounds like I enjoy the first one a little more than you, but I mainly agree. It's not that the human story is bad. But it isn't particularly good. Still, I like how much of the movie shows the monsters from a human perspective. We only see them fleetingly as people flee from them. Then, we get the big final battle and the eventual payoff of the atomic breath.
Despite the constant presence of humans, the second one doesn't do as good of a job of capturing the human terror of encountering such monsters.  That being said, in that sense it kind of mirrors the original series. Gojira has very little of the monster, and the Godzilla is depicted as terrifying. Subsequent entries are goofier.

Yeah, the build in the first one is great.

Aside from the human stuff sucking, the second lacked groundedness and a sense of place, IMO, so the fights weren't as satisfying. Still fun, though.

At least one person in the trailer comments that Godzilla's behavior is odd. That something is causing him to behave uncharacteristically. So something will be revealed in the movie to explain his being the apparent villain, and likely he and Kong will team up to defeat the real villain at the end. Many in the thread speculate mecha Godzilla.

I thought general criticism was the first didn't have enough monster?

Those who dislike it tend to dislike it for that reason. I like it for that reason. It builds toward the final battle where we finally see Godzilla go ham on the other MUTOs. Also, it helps emphasize the human perspective on these monsters.

I'm not against focusing on human characters, I even think killing Cranston early on was a good twist. But the problem was Bland McBoringface then had to carry the movie and he couldn't.

That's Madison, Vera Farmiga's daughter in G:KoM (Millie). Might be a bit of a reach having her suddenly become the monster behavioural expert for this one, but Millie is bank at the moment, so makes sense from a marketing POV.

I mean, I don't know why they got so cute with the trailer, but whoever did should be fired. First, they reveal everything. Second, they make it unapologetically all Kong. Third, who the fark picks that music for this trailer.

Not spoilers since it's in the trailer:

1. MechaGodzilla confirmed -

2. Did Godzilla Shrink? That is a Burke Class Destroyer next to that "giant" Monarch aircraft carrier. Note a Burke Class destroyer is only 510 feet long. Godzilla alone is 393 feet tall and almost as long as that ship by himself in King of the Monsters.
Fark user imageView Full Size

3. Also, in Kong Skull island we see his dead parents bones and they are only slightly bigger than Kong. Again, leading us to believe if Kong gets bigger it's likely through some other means (note the alien stuff at the end when Kong is standing on the glowing Godzilla painting in Hollow Earth) and the literal spaceship next to his shoulder. Also, the glowing Hammer/Axe he has at the end that can somehow withstand Godzilla's atomic breath.

It's an issue with licensing and legal rights to the character. Leaving it as Kong negates having to litigate it. Boring I know.

Well that's no fun.  Thanks both.

Not spoilers since it's in the trailer:

1. MechaGodzilla confirmed -

[Fark user image image 850x348]
[Fark user image image 850x350]

[Fark user image image 850x347]
4. Last, you literally see Godzilla's tail with Kong's Shoulder while the "other" most likely skin suit MechaGodzilla is in the background the entire frame.

[Fark user image image 850x350]

Agree with everything but the last set of pics. That isn't a tail, but rather the Axe with Godzilla's dorsal plate on it. Overall though, you are right on.
Plus, if you want more spoilers and confirmation, Google the Godzilla vs Kong toy leak.

Looking forward to it, even if the outcome is somewhat obvious. Any excuse to watch giant monsters duking it out is always a worthy one.

I mean, it's a Godzilla movie.

/I enjoyed the hell out of the first one

The first is the better movie. They're both enjoyable because... ya know, monsters fighting... but the second one isn't a particularly good movie otherwise.

Bland McBoringface and Elizabeth Olsen should have switched roles.

Wow, didn't know that and now just confirms almost everything. Damn.

I will watch and enjoy the movie regardless, I just don't want Kong to win, because it seems idiotic given their battle history and power sets. I never understood the fascination with Kong, but to each their own I guess.

If you've already seen the movie you *really* need to put spoiler warnings on your post, man.  Don't be spoiler guy.

Y'know, if you've already seen the movie to know what you're talking about; of course.

If Godzilla loses he's going to claim fraud and file lawsuits for months.

"I won that fight, by a lot!"

FormlessOne: Seriously, two shipping containers, stacked one atop another, is just under 16 feet - they're typically 7'10" tall.

So, unless he's about 300 friggin' yards away, he's nowhere near tall enough in that shot to justify that stupid "two assholes fighting on the deck of an aircraft carrier made of aerogel" shot.

Scale in movies is not a big priority.  How many scenes in movies have you seen two actors talking to each other, seemingly face to face, and then in wider screen shots you see that one character is half a foot taller than the other?  Happens all the time.

And as others have said, this is a cartoon with some live action interspersed, not a nature documentary.

The main thing I expect from a giant ape punching a radioactive dinosaur is realism.

I just care about rules.  The rules can be ridiculous and unrealistic, but if you say "Godzilla never eats butter" in one scene, but show him eating buttered toast in the next, I'm going to get bugged.  Just don't say anything about butter, or stick to your buttery guns.

Weatherkiss: drjekel_mrhyde: Godzilla is the bad guy.

Until they realize the true fight isn't between themselves, but the monster that's bigger than them both.

Maybe the true fight is the kaiju we met along the way?

Two very important questions no one has seemed to ask; Since a journey from Skull Island to Japan would take at least a few days (most likely longer), how many bulldozers are on the air craft carrier to push Kongs shiat into the ocean? Also is there any poo flinging?

/The questions above are just as stupid as this movie.

To clarify, it's not that I like the human story that's told. It's all right, but as you note, bland. I like that the perspective we have on the monsters is generally from a human position. We only see them in fits and starts because the humans the narrative perspective is focused on are (understandably) running away scared. I think it builds tension and creates a good build toward the final fight.

If I recall the original one was pretty much all about Kong too while Godzilla was just walking around Japan doing urban renewal.

I do second the revealing too much in the trailer, hell if Disney could sit on Baby Yoda, even as the show premiered in the holiday season, Warner Bros. could have done similar.

it's kinda of hard to guess how the fight will go.
one relies on it's bulk and meanness and one
relies on it's wiry constitution and vegan lifestyle.
/wait, what?
//godzilla vs kong?
///sorry i thought this was bluto vs popeye
////my mistake.

If Kong cracks open a giant can of spinach before the final fight, I will love this movie forever. But they should really save that for Godzilla vs Staypuft. The Marshmallow Man is the sailor.
