It helped him make 5 million dollars last night.

I don't think it was ever meant as part of the fight strategy.

This guy is big-famous because he had a SPECTACULARLY unorthodox knock-out early in his career, and because whenever a microphone is put in front of his face he says outlandish things with a novel accent.

The shoe fits pretty well.  Notre Dame got that mascot after Notre Dame students chased a KKK rally out of town in excellent potato throwing fashion.  That has been their high point ever since.  But for some reason, they remain beloved all this time later.

Nice.

Ol' Conor hasn't fared too well lately. It's almost like his early matches all had a predetermined outcome.

I mean, the reason he could say "I'm going to knock him out with a left cross in the third round" was because he had read the script.

He was definitely riding a giant hype wave with favorable match-ups.  I think that he got into a lot of his opponents' heads with all the hype and shiat talk.

Then he ran into Nate Diaz, who is a great fighter, but also a bit of a journeyman and a last minute replacement.  Nate doesn't get phased by hype or shiat talking, and he performed accordingly by beating Connor by submission (but basically TKO).  After that, the magic was broken.  Connor also got $50M from the Mayweather fight, which doesn't help his motivation going forward.

Suffice to say, I don't think it was ever outright rigged.  I think Nate broke him.

I, for one am just sad that we never got to see the Brock Lesnar vs. Connor match to prove once and for all whether pro wrestling was a better martial art than pro MMA.  Obviously, pro boxing has proven to be best by Floyd Mayweather's decisive KO victories over both The Big Show and Connor

BeesNuts: ..... with a novel accent.

This is also part of it. Americans go squee over comprehensible, yet exotic, statements. Which basically means the English language with an accent. Why else would there have been so many hometown-y inteviews with people across Ireland? UFC has turned itself into as much WWE/Reality TV as it has been promoting good fights.

Now, we can all forget about the Whiskey Salesman and look forward to this weekend  https://www.onefc.com/events/unbreakable-ii/ for some decent grappling (which, as I recall, is a part of MMA)

McGregor beat Max Holloway, Dustin Potrero, and Jose Aldo among others before the Diaz fight.

He beat Diaz in a very close rematch.

He then beat Eddie Alvarez and won his second belt.

That's about as far from a carefully curated list of pushovers as you can get.

Is he the same fighter now as he was at the Alvarez fight? Not even close. Guessing that has more to do with snorting coke and not properly preparing for Poirer than it does with following a script or not.

I assumed that if anything was going to become a meme fro that card it would've been that awkward little dance Sanchez did after that shot to the chin from Muradov. I lost count of the number of times I laughed at that.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my more serious post, but I do agree that Conor deserves great accolades both as a fighter and as a a wielder of mental gamesmanship.   In my view, the later supported the former for a while but has since been knocked down a peg.

But yes, as I alluded to, an overabundance of success is likely a big factor as well.

This seems like wishful thinking.  But the more I think on it, it feels like a coin toss.  Will he actually learn and grow from this, or will he surround himself with the chucklefarks who make him feel good and learn nothing.

Does he actually have the drive to fight?  Or is his drive entirely to make lots money, which he has already accomplished.  I'm not even sure he knows the answers to these questions.  But it'll be fun finding out.

I apologize for leaving the house and missing out on the opportunity to respond to this post in a timely manner.

I will hereby otherwise inform you that your comments will be forwarded to the Lowell Journal For The Arts and that it will be published on the cover, along with a picture of our hero, Money "Floyd" Mayweather, knocking out every major champion from every combat sport in human history.

I am still working to get the publishing rights for the photographs of Crixus, but I am sure his beneficiaries in the Senate will allow it.

Imagine being so mentally deranged that you're compelled to fight people for money even after you have generational wealth.

Sure, but I test myself with matters involving intelligence, not matters that will cause damage to my body.

In a lot of ways. Both super popular out of the gate with nice signature wins. Then we got to see more of them as people and realized they were genuinely bad people and we can replay their knockout losses daily and never get tired of them

You know what? I see that I didn't specify and that is on me. My apologies.

The nickname part, "Fighting Irish." That is what I was going for. As for the rest of the book, to the best of my knowledge there are no issues with it.

BeesNuts: And while I know what you're trying to say about The Dollop, you're suggesting that you would prefer a podcast that elevates research that popularizes false notions.

I have revulsion concerning that podcast, deep revulsion. I had no idea who they were or anything, just that somebody recommended them due to me being a Tribe fan and that podcast having done an episode on Ten Cent Beer Night.

It is like they went out of their way to pick the most often told but sensational sounding rumors they heard from a drunk friend of a high friend at a lobotomy convention, it was ridiculous how much they got wrong that could have been killed in the crib with any amount of effort put into it. Had I not listened to it myself, if I was told how many basics they screwed up I would have thought the person was going overboard.

So with that being my first experience with them and then to see them popularize the really nifty sounding but false "Notre Dame got their nickname from encounters with the Ku Klux Klan" story, it was all I could do to say anything at all without puking. It was more a reaction to them and not you but since I didn't make that clear it falls at my feet.
