Giving into blackmail instead of doing what is right and required says a lot about a person and the moral fiber of a political party. Republicans have a choice are they pro America or not.

Or, Trump's threat of a third party would compel Republicans to convict him and ensure that he would be barred from running for office again.

Yeah this is the correct view. Why would he think it would coerce them to vote AGAINST it?

I don't care how it goes down, I just want Trump to do as much damage to the Republican party as possible.
That is the only leverage he has left, destruction or the threat of.

As a life long voting democrat, I'm glad this is the last word on the whole Trump subject.

What third party threat.

Starting even a regional party would take money, time and effort. Trump can provide none of those things

A good could come from it. I would really like all States to have open primaries, you pay the filing fee you are on the primary ballot, the top 2 vote getters are on the general. Make more about the person not the party.

Some deep-pocket group could get it started with the Don as a figurehead.  PAC money would roll in.  Much mischief would result.  Although just the threat of being primaried is keeping most Republican House of Representatives in line already.

My take here is that we are in one of the more, if not the MOST, volatile times in our Nation's history vis-a-vis morality and politics.  In two years when we have the mid-terms we will get a much better picture of where we are hearing.  Frankly, I am not confident as the stupidity is just astonishing.

tl;dr Exactly what you say.

But: Donnie could (& likely will) run other people in his orbit & try to split the ticket that way. Difficulty: there's no indication that anyone in Donnie's orbit can actually do well in elections. He might get enough support to throw a House race or two but the House has already voted. It is very likely that the Senate races that will be close enough that a third party candidate could split them are more moderate states where the greater risk is probably in the primary, where a Trumpist could get nominated instead. But since the Trumpist challengers are all going to be trying for the Trump party nomination, this would actually make their primary safer. In the general, a moderate state is also more likely to have a candidate lose support for acquitting Donnie than gain support.

That is the reason I believe Dems need to stay on the offensive and not their normal position of defense otherwise known as reacting instead of acting. Republicans tried to overthrow the Government that can't just be forgotten.

I really miss arguing about actual policy using empirical data compared to what you can make group feel or believe now without facts mattering at all for a majority of the republican party.

The fark are you smoking?  We had a period where people were openly killing each other for almost a decade - and then that led to the Civil War.  And then we had the Civil Rights Era with enough riots, lynching, and assassinations to make the Capitol invasion not even get a mention on the nightly news.  And the Vietnam War, with protests and shootings of civilians galore.  Not to mention the late 1800s and early 1900s where the US sent in police and even the military to shoot strikers - or even those who thought about striking.  Right now is more funky than is the usual fare, but it needs to ramp its game up significantly to break into the top five, much less the pole position.  The "Nation's History" didn't start in farking 1985.  You've been living through an unusually quiet period in American history.  Maybe, if this keeps up, it might deserve a higher spicy rating in a few years.  But if now makes you all pearl-clutching, you would have just simply died of fright in most years of the Nation's History.  And that's assuming you are white, (nominally) Christian, and middle-class.  If not, boy, you oughta know better.

I don't know. It seems to me that a lot of moderate Republicans changed parties by vote if not by registration, which the Democrats counted on to win this past election. I wonder if the number of rabid Trumpers switching to the Third Reich Party would be offset by moderates returning (or mugwump Demos turning) to a renewed GOP seven degrees right of top dead center.

Not sure I follow. I'm saying that moderate GOP senators are more likely to win the GOP nomination if they drive off all the extreme candidates to a new Trumpist party. I'm also saying that GOPers in a moderate state are more likely to benefit in the general from a vote to convict than from a vote to acquit.

If the Senate succeeds in preventing Trump from ever running again, a third party with Trump leading it still would need a Presidential candidate. Can you name a single person in  the Trump orbit that could really ignite the  common clay's enthusiasm? Moreover, Trump's ego  would never allow him to support someone better than himself.

Now, if the senate fails in the impeachment trial and Trump runs again, it only cements the centrists to go with the Dems, or not vote, and Trump and the GOP lose. Again.

Trump lies.

Trump has no leverage if you know he is lying.

"I'm going to start my own centralized intelligence agency, with rainbow ice cream and space aliens"
- this nonsense makes as much sense as Trump's threat and is equally likely to happen.

Sitting in a garage with a deck of Zener cards is not an intelligence agency and neither would Trump's vlog be a new media empire or political party.

But starting a party and running someone else as his puppet might just be his dream.
