TFA: "The bill advanced from the House committee on a party-line vote of 13-5, with all Republicans voting against it."

2021-01-22 1:24:03 PM
The bill advanced from the House committee on a party-line vote of 13-5, with all Republicans voting against it. It still must pass both chambers of the General Assembly, but with Democrats controlling the statehouse and Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam backing the measure, it is almost certain to pass.

If you needed more evidence that the parties flipped in 1968, I'll present this as Evidence #1,231,874,324.

If he's a racist, the statue's gotta come down, no matter what political party.

FTA: Republican Del. Wendell Walker introduced the bill, apparently with the aim of needling Democrats who were pushing for the removal of Confederate monuments, saying "what's good for the goose is good for the gander."
But when met with agreement from across the aisle on removing the statue, Walker asked that the bill be killed, and Democrats acquiesced.

Harry Byrd was one of more significant Southern Democrats to break with the national party after the 1948 Dixiecrat revolt.

Harry Byrd spoke over a state-wide radio network on Friday evening, October 17, 1952. He began, "In my twenty years in the Senate I have fought many lone battles. Rightly or wrongly I have not always trod the popular road." He attacked the Truman Administration for its fiscal policies, the proposed repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act, and its civil-rights program. In the senatorial primary, Byrd continued, "I was nominated as a Virginia Democrat and during the campaign repeatedly stated that I was not a Truman Democrat." He declared that Trumanism had been the dominant issue of the senatorial campaign and was again the most important issue of the presidential election. If he were to support a candidate urging a continuation of Truman's policies, Byrd declared, he could not be true to the pledges which he made in the primary campaign. He said in conclusion: "I will not, and cannot, in good conscience, endorse the Democratic platform or the Stevenson-Sparkman ticket. Endorsement means to recommend, and this I cannot do."

With Byrd's support, Eisenhower won in Virginia in '52 and '56, and he was so pleased with Byrd that he offered him the position of Secretary of Commerce.

Harry Byrd was a bigger racist than Robert Byrd, and more influential, but since he died a lot sooner, he doesn't get mentioned a lot.

My bad; Ike offered Byrd the position of Treasury Secretary, not Commerce Secretary.

2021-01-22 1:59:02 PM
Still lots of things named after him here in Virginia:

Shenandoah National Park's main visitor center is named in his honor. The Blue Ridge Parkway bridge over the James River in Big Island, Va was named and dedicated to him in 1985. On November 26, 1968, the Virginia State Highway Commission named Virginia State Route 7, a historic road which travels from Alexandria past Berryville to Winchester, as "Harry Flood Byrd Highway" between Alexandria and Winchester. The name is still in use between the Shenandoah River and Leesburg.

It was initially proposed by a Republican who withdrew the bill after it got Democratic support instead of upsetting them. They then submitted their own, which is now passing.

Republican's worship their "leaders" and have a psychological need to act as if they're perfect. Like in all the other cases of them being unable to understand that other people's brains work differently they are unable to understand that Democrats don't hesitate to turn on corrupt members of our own party.

They put party above everything, we put our values first and try to live up to them.

Progressives are more than happy to send any Democrat with the name Byrd to the dustbin of history.

Eh. Simply being a racist isn't the problem. People who reinforced systemic racism are the problem, especially when those actions are a large part of their historic contributions. So yeah, we don't need to glorify a segregationist, tear it down.

2021-01-22 3:07:14 PM
Democrats are smart enough to know that this whole segregation/slavery crapshat wasn't about democrats or republicans but conservatives vs liberals. It's conservatives that were and are anti-civil rights, anti-voting rights, pro-slavery, and pro-segregation whether they called themselves "democrats" or "republicans". It was the policies of Kennedy and Johnson that caused a mass movement of those democrat conservatives - "Dixiecrats" - to the republican party of the 1960s, where they were welcomed with open arms and still reside today.

Pisser is when today's republicans seek to blame all sorts of past wrongs on "democrats" when they are actually pointing the finger at conservatives, a concept they are too farking stupid to grasp.

So yup, tear those statues of "democrats" down. Put them in museums, give the scrap bronze to college sculpture classes, whatever. Just get them out of the public square.

Hahahahaha.

One of the few things democrats are good as is forcing republicans into 'gotcha' votes.  Republicans try and turn the tables to try and project their own inconsistencies on the democrats and it laughingly blows up in their face.  This isn't the first time.

/I seem to remember republicans trying to do that a few years ago in the US House, I can't remember what the bill was about.  Some far-right loony-tune spending bill I think?  Democrats called their bluff and all voted present forcing the republicans to actually go on the record and they had to quickly scramble to kill their own bill at the last second of voting.
//I seem to recall despite that it was a purposeful publicity stunt by the republicans to hurt the democrats they got ROYALLY pissed the dems threw it back in their face masterfully.
