(The New York Times)   The first wave of arrests in the Capitol riots were easy, since they were the morons who advertised their participation on social media. But there are still hundreds left, and tracking them down is going to be much harder. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED   (nytimes.com) divider line

There are plenty who aren't hiding, they're right there in the Capitol at work and bringing their guns onto the floor.

When are they going to be arrested?

I'm pretty sure it starts falling into place as soon as they start sifting thru texts and emails.....especially the recently deleted.

"Remember, if anyone asks, you, me and (individual #3) were never there. Tell everyone else to say the same thing"

And then just roll from their.

Yeah, those sorts of texts are gonna bring conspiracy and destruction of evidence charges into play for a lot of folks. Deleting shiat off your cell ain't gonna save you when they subpoena a month's worth of the phone company records for all IMSIs located in the capitol building during the specified times...

Until I see the arrests of the main culprits, the instigators in the US executive and legislature, who actually pushed the dimwits onto the Capitol grounds with a bunch of lies and direct calls for violence, it is hard to take this too seriously.

That should be easy too.  There were A LOT of cameras involved.  A lot of video and stills.  Subpoena the footage and run facial recognition and that should yield plenty of rotten fruit.

Has to be done.

If it's only a few dozen arrests out of the thousands who stormed the US Capitol, what future insurrectionists will take out of this is "I like those odds".

Um you know since the patriot act was enacted the nsa keeps ( saves ) metadata on every internet connected device who's data goes through an isp (even the clecs). All they really need is a sql search using the data of people known to be there and the pull geodata on anyone within 50 feet . Plus I am pretty sure at night they used this stingray devices so they know who to go for.

This all reminds me of an incident that took place while I was in college.

An armored car crashed or the door came open on the freeway spilling cash.

Cars stopped to scoop it up and the freeway shut down till order could be controlled again.

In the end, entire bags went missing.

Thing was, a mobil news crews happened to be on a nearby overpass caught the people running around including faces and plate numbers.

Folks had 24 hours to turn themselves and the money in no questioned asked. After that knocks and arrests.

I see no difference here, except the 24 hours is up......enjoy being a "political martyr"

Come on, Ditty. You're waaay smarter than this.

14,000+ arrests over the summer. Including more journalists than I can even count or want to. Rubber bullets aimed at camera-people's eyes - more than once, successfully blinding them. Cities blanketed in chemical weapons banned by Geneva Conventions. Unmarked vans filled with after-dark snatch squads. Brave new orders protecting statuary. As hoc 'Federal' troops cobbled together from the very bottom of the Bureau Of Prisons barrel. And a straight-up daylight execution.

We already know who else.

Doesn't matter if location is enabled.

They can work out if you were there if your cell phone was on, even with location disabled, because every few seconds or minutes (depending on if you're moving or not), your cell phone "pings" the local cell sites.   These "pings" are recorded at the different cell sites and are retained by the service providers.

The pings themselves aren't necessarily evil in and of themselves, because the system has to know where to route your incoming calls, texts, data, etc.  It has to work that way.

But it also means that both in real time, and in retrospect, anyone with access to those ping records can plot a reasonable accurate location of where you are, depending on the density of cell sites.   In the country, maybe you might be able to narrow it down to a mile or two, but in a place like Washington DC, most likely less than a few dozen yards.   Not really accurate enough for 911 service, but accurate enough to be able to guess if you made it into the Capitol building or not.

All the police have to do is get a geofence warrant, or request "tower dumps" from the providers in the area in order to identify any phone that was suspected of being involved.

That alone might not be enough for a conviction, because of the relative imprecision of the location derived. It's not a precise location, more of a statistical likelihood that transmitter A was within an ellipse of X meters by Y meters*..

But it certainly would be good enough to identify suspects and further investigation of things like security cameras and social media picture posts could use facial recognition or tattoos and unique clothing to confirm if they were there.

If you're going to do something the government doesn't approve of, best to leave the cell phone at home.   That's generic advice that applies to everyone.

Oh, and turning it off doesn't necessarily help.   After all, how do you know it's really off?

Admiral Snackbar was talking about arresting Republican representatives and senators, ones who committed no crimes whatsoever, except of course for being Republican.

So don't lecture me on this.  That's bad, evil, and wrong, and no amount of "whataboutism" is going to change that, and you should be *ASHAMED* for even attempting it.

You know, this could be the premise for an anime.  A lot of anime's feature protagonists who go on a quest to capture/defeat a variety of criminals.  We just need a bishonen to lead the way.  He should have silver hair, a cold demeanor, dress fashionably, and constantly be planning one step a head.  We shall call him Kurama.

Inciting insurrection is a crime, numbnuts. So is being a part of the insurrection.

I'm talking about people who committed crimes. I didn't mention a political party at all, I'm talking about justice for criminals who tried to bring down our government. I know they're your heroes, but they're still criminals.
