He launched an armed and deadly uprising against his own county, in an attempt to overthrow democracy.

He's not a world leader at that point, he's a terrorist.

You dumb fascist enabling farkers. He was actively trying to destroy you. Just go metaphorically shoot your company in the head if you want to give him back power.

Facebook needs to die along with OAN, Newsmax, conservative (terrorist) radio, and Fox News.

Fark his feelings and theirs

It's the facebook model to do the literal worst things possible.

So they had to do this.

This is precisely why companies set up "oversight boards" like this.

I WISH my friends across the country would use a different means of communication. I'd lose contact with about 40 people if I terminated my facebook. And most of them are the libbiest of libs, so I just don't get it.

Yeah but Facebook created Trump and was the primary place the coop was planned, and organized, so maybe we should stop pretending that they are not in cahoots.

"There has been, in my view, legitimate commentary, not only here in the U.S., but crucially from leaders around the world" about Trump's suspension, Clegg said. "Many of those leaders and other commentators have said, look, they might agree with the steps we took, but they worry about what they view as unaccountable power of private companies making big decisions about political speech. And we agree with them."

I also agree, actually. Now who is the Oversight Board accountable to? Because as far as I can gather from the article, the only two possible answers to that question are either "Facebook" or "No one."

Normally oversight boards are good because they are political appointments which ultimately makes them accountable to politicians who are accountable to voters. This just seems like it is, at best, replacing one unaccountable entity with another, different unaccountable entity.

2021-01-22 8:35:31 AM
Wait, they gave him his account back?
This, after every other social media outlet, including such players as Pinterest and Spotify banned him?!

And this is the platform, remember, that was the most responsible for all of the election muddling that occurred in 2016.

And they gave him his account back.

Zuckerberg, you can get right on farking yourself!  We need his communications channels shut the fark OFF.  Completely!  There is no reason for him to have an account now.  He has lost his social media privileges.

There shouldn't be any more second chances for the guy, he tried to overthrow a legitimate government.

Saying that he learned his lesson and giving him a megaphone to speak in should tell you all you need to know about Fashbook.

It's Facebook's board, that they set up.  Who else would it be accountable to, in this case?

There was a link in the article which talks about the board, but since so few people actually bothered reading the article (welcome to Fark, right?) :

"The board is scheduled to start operating this year, according to the co-chairs, who authored the essay. Two of the four co-chairs, Jamal Greene and Michael McConnell, are U.S. law professors. The other two co-chairs are Catalina Botero-Marino, a law school dean in Colombia, and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the former prime minister of Denmark. Of the 20-person board, which was selected by the co-chairs, nine are academics. Five are American.
The board will eventually expand to 40 members.

The co-chairs said that the board comprises members from diverse professional, cultural and religious backgrounds, all of whom are 'committed to freedom of expression within the framework of international norms of human rights.'

Facebook has agreed to carry out decisions of the board, which it has funded with an independent $130 million trust.

The co-chairs noted that while the board will implement a system for users to provide input and flag content, it won't be able to respond to every case. Instead, they said it will focus on cases relevant to public discourse."

Be the change...

No really, someone has to be first.    I quit shortly before tRUmp** started his run and was off for about 2 or 3 years(deactivated to prevent tagging and 3rd party group additions...ugh FB is really the worst).

In 2018 or so, my wife noticed I was taggable and i logged in to deactivate again (it was determined that my sister in law accidently reactivated my account with a saved login)...

And KAPOW! It was 3 years of mostly blissful ignorance of just how dumb/racist my recent coworkers and extended family are.  Overnight (to me) a huge portion of my loved and respected people were outed as overt racists and bigots.   A real slap in the face.

I have since firmed up my conclusion that I don't really need to know what every one ate for lunch or their every passing thought. If FARK counts, this is all thats left of my social media presence and, hive of scum and villainy though it may be, you guys are all right.

The moral of the story?  We don't need 5,000 friends; "crazy uncles" and loons should be made to face the disdain on the faces of their loved ones when they spout gatbage rather than the likes/thumbs/follows of their echo chamber.  It all has to start somewhere.  In my peer group, it started with me.

Nobody has the inherent right to use any private service, or even any public service from another country. This kind of posturing is nothing more than an ego trip for Facebook and every other social media site. "Look how great we are! The world can't function without us!" Yes it can, even today. You are not that important except insofar as you aid and abett hatred and bigotry by letting their proponents use your platform.
