Only 16 needed.  Fewer if there are no-shows.

Make it a secret ballot and they'll probably get their conviction.

And then we'll get to watch the crazies speculating which of their number broke ranks.

I'm betting there are 16 who still want a big sweaty wad of corporate money and the Disneys of the world have said they didn't enjoy the attempted coup.

Also, Turtle doesn't about trump grifting into the GOP money for next election cycle. I think he get's barred for every holding public office.

/it's not about the principle, it's about the money!

I thought they only needed a simple majority to block Trump from running for office again.

From TFA:

A second Republican senator said the Republican Party needs to rebuild and warned it will be tough to bring Trump's base into the party tent ahead of the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential election if GOP senators vote in large numbers to convict Trump.

"I do think his supporters would be very upset," the lawmaker said.

It's about holding on to power first and foremost.  They don't want to convict because it will make Trump's still-loyal base harder if not impossible to bring back to the Republican fold.

Doing the right thing only works for Republicans if they think it'll get them more votes than if they were shiatheels.

/They never think that.

There may be evidence and witnesses this time.

Be happy your jury trial would never work like this. I was undergoing jury selection in Phoenix once and one of my fellow candidates was adamant the defendant (who we didn't know anything about) was guilty because the cops wouldn't have arrested him if he wasn't. The judge was quite annoyed, gave the person a stern lecture, and then dismissed her.

After impeachment (I think)

Only after the 2/3 vote to convict.

2021-01-22 10:42:44 AM
Again, that's PERFECTLY fine, hang Trump around their neck like an albatross...

They have to get the 2/3rd conviction first.

No doubt there.  The GOP would be thrilled not to have to compete with Trump in the next primary, and yet they'd still be able to claim they didn't vote to convict and constantly complain against the Democrats and impeachment.  It's basically a win-win for the GOP.

2021-01-22 10:44:53 AM
He is safe.

Your Nation dare not impeach him. It would be an admission of weakness.

You are not strong enough to admit to a mistake.

2021-01-22 10:45:14 AM
FTA: chances that former President Trump will be convicted in an impeachment trial are plummeting

That's why McConnell wants further delay. He knows by February 6, 2021 Trumps' attempt to overthrow American democracy will be so 90 seconds ago for most Americans. It will be old news that the average person no longer wants to dwell on.

2021-01-22 10:46:03 AM
I thought the Right claimed that they never cower to terrorists.  Or did that not include the ones in their own party?

edmo: There may be evidence and witnesses this time.

All Dems have to do is play the interrogation tapes where the rioters say that Trump's words drove them to action that day.

2021-01-22 10:46:11 AM
"For the most part, there is a real strong consensus among our members that this is after the fact. He's out of office and impeachment is a remedy to remove somebody from office, so there's the constitutional question"

SO if you want to do some crazy Presidential stuff wait until the last month or so of your term---you would be impeachable!

AllerJeez: He is safe.

Time has passed. Tempers have cooled. It's time to move on.

/fark the R's in the Senate

2021-01-22 10:47:34 AM
That's fine.  Then you can bounce all the OTHER senators under the 14th.

2021-01-22 10:48:08 AM
Once again.

If Turtle wants it, oppose it. Turtle wants Trump out of play in 2024 and not able to interfere in 2022.

The corporations will eventually start donating money back to the GOP but Republican voters will still vote Republican tomorrow.

This. They want his voters just not him. They don't get his voters by preventing him from running. But they do know that the average voter: largely votes for the same party every election and has the attention span of an insect. Just getting kicked off twitter basically took all of the wind out of Trump's sails. Cocaine Mitch is evil not stupid.

2021-01-22 10:48:44 AM
If I'm a Democratic Senator I'm probably more concerned with other things. Let Mitch have the delay if he wants, in exchange for allowing the Senate to actually vote on some bills.

IS 18 a few?  That would be enough

At the same time, this lawmaker warned of the dangers of the party being too beholden to Trump.
"The Republican Party is going to have to have a discussion about its future. At some point it's going to have to become about something more than a person," the lawmaker said.

If only you had an opportunity to excise Trump from the political body once and for all...

Yep

"I'm a Patriot"
"You were okay with Trump attempting a coup, letting a group of armed militants run wild in the Capitol, killing cops and seeking to lynch the Vice President. Your vote shows you are no patriot."

Regardless - I repeat - he is safe.

The USA has a messianic attitude towards its Presidents.

Trump will live an easy life now complaining about how unfair it all was .... and you will pay his bills.

The fact that Pelosi is sending the impeachment to the Senate on Monday instead of delaying may indicate that they think that they have the votes.  Could be quick.

40 degree day: If I'm a Democratic Senator I'm probably more concerned with other things. Let Mitch have the delay if he wants, in exchange for allowing the Senate to actually vote on some bills.

And then Mitch blocks those bills as well HAVE YOU NOT PAID ANY ATTENTION TO HIM FOR THE LAST DECADE?

He's got a filibuster, and he WILL use it constantly. He's even keeping control of the committees by filibustering the reorganization resolution.

He's majority leader in all but name.

2021-01-22 10:52:06 AM
If they fail to convict, they are all cowards. Even public opinion is turning fairly decisively in favor of impeachment now that he is out of office, off Twitter, and he didn't pardon any of the insurrectionists. I suspect they will indeed fail to convict, like the bunch of feckless pussies they have proven to be time and again.

Trump not running in 2024 helps the GOP.

They need to just jettison the crazy assholes, and peel off the corporate support from the democrats.  The sooner we leave the MAGAts out in the cold the better.

They need 17.  They will get 16.  Just enough to show they are deeply concerned.  Not enough to hurt election chances.

This. It's just for show anyway, they would rather have Trump in the background farking with the GOP anyway. They know he isn't a threat in a presidential election anymore.

No. IMO, the Dems need to strike while the iron is hot and the memories of the riot are fresh in the public's memory. If they wait until February the Repubs are going to state "Oh that was so long ago, why are you dragging this on, this doesn't Heal the Nation, blahblahblah." And the public is going to side with them.

Nah. They know that at the end of the day Trump didn't help their candidates, they're losing big donors for continuing to support insurrection, and what's Trump going to do make fun of them on whatever social media he has left to use?

Meanwhile they know that every one of those dumb bastards will vote whoever has R next to their name. They've been doing it even when it farks them over personally, they'll certainly continue to do so.

Removal by whom? The GOP who supports them? The same GOP voters who the day after the capitol riot claimed to overwhelmingly support Donald Trump for 2024?
