(Sydney Morning Herald)   Although the IOC and the Japanese government are still publicly stating the show will go on, insiders are saying that the 2020 Olympics are already canceled, but nobody wants the shame of announcing it   (smh.com.au) divider line

I would think there'd be far more shame in admitting you're the sort of oblivious halfwit who believes there's a safe way to host them.

Move it to 2024. And whoever had 2024 gets 2028.

It sucks for the athletes but what are you going to do?

Either move it to 2022 and have the summer and winter olympics together, I don't see the harm in that... or just don't have spectators.  It's not like the olympics make any decent money from spectators anyway.

We have a vaccine.  How many athletes do we send to the olympics?  A few thousand?  Just make sure they're fully vaccinated before the end of August (if we're not vaccinating the public by then we're thoroughly screwed anyway) and play.

Of all the topics that get batted around in my household with respect to the COVID19 outbreak, the Olympics are number one. "Are they going to....?  Should they.....?"

I do not really care so much. Deep down, I hope they do it. I think they probably could, but the vaccines are going to take just a shade too long. Maybe they should shoot for 2022, which should be enough time that the games can be a celebration of international OPENING UP and SHARING. That would be great.

The answer to the Trivia question above is

Japan 1940. All events cancelled for obvious reasons. Not a good time for international friendship by any means. History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes.
