Exactly. They're going to play the victim either way and it makes slightly more sense that they do it when they're in the minority even though it's still a metric ton of BS.

I seem to have run out of any sympathy for the American right.  They're always wrong about everything.

It's literally their platform. With no actual platform, "no because fark you" is the default setting.

Nice principles you got there, assholes.

No, it's function is to funnel wealth to the wealthy, be it by domestic or foreign means. As a result it needs leaders who can distract  which is why Trump was a good Republican.

They loved his tax cuts and deregulation. They tolerated his rich biatch behavior.

Actual governing is hard and requires compromise.
Sitting on your hands and saying no to everything is far easier.
As we all know.

When you elect people who claim government cannot do anything right what you get are a bunch of elected officials who believe its their job to ensure the government doesn't do anything.

Who will proclaim in a campaign speech: "I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' 'interests,' I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can."

The nineteen most terrifying words in the English language are, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

Every day of this presidency, people in conservative media will be saying that Biden is terrible, his policy ideas are disastrous, and they're hurtling us toward a hellish socialist dystopia. That will be the case no matter what Biden does or doesn't do - and Democrats finally get it. What matters is whether their initiatives get passed, and then deliver tangible benefits to people.

Bingo.  When everything is socialism, nothing is.  Whether you're going for $12, $15, or $500 an hour, they'll screech just as hard.  So fark it, let's swing for the fences.

There's really no reason to let the American right near any decision more meaningful than a dinner menu until such a time as the "thought leaders" in their movement aren't just peddling toxic levels of recreational outrage.

It's a cult, and should be treated as such.

2021-01-21 4:06:47 PM
It goes deeper than that: why can the Republicans can stonewall everything and get all the votes but the Democrats can't?

It's because the typical Democratic voter actually expects the government to *do* something to help them.  If things don't get better during Democratic control of the government, its voters will not show up for the next election.

Republicans are the opposite- Republican doctrine is that the government can do nothing good (except blow up brown people with really expensive toys) so if everything falls to shiat, well, better vote even more Republicans in since the government obviously wasn't doing nothing well enough.  A completely broken government is the *goal* of modern Republicans, and Republican voters will reward them for everything they break.

The American right is built to fleece poor people and maintain the political power status quo. We have codified privilege in our tax code because of the right. We have reduced access to healthcare because of the right. We have reduced access to education because of the right. We have reduced access to democratic institutions because of the right.

The American right is neither democratic nor honorable. Fark 'em.

This is obvious when they were the dog who caught the car in 2016. They had all 3 branches of government and even Trump had the lowest popularity ratings of his Presidency, including during covid. They're in a real catch-22, they need to not be in charge to be appealing, but when they are in charge they're terrible at it

Part of their problem is that their voters hate the strawmen they've presented various government programs as, but actually love nearly everything those programs do in reality. Hence their comical lack of follow through on the "repeal and replace Obamacare!" thing, for instance.

They've been "governing" like that a lot longer than 4 years. Jesus, would people stop blaming President Useless Asshole for everything that's happened and put as much energy into denouncing his willing stooges: the Republican party and its voters?

Plus some "progressives" and "libertarians."
