that's pretty farked up.

I'm a little surprised that the shooting-gallery worked undetected.  Isn't a .30-30 rather on the loud side?  I have a house with a finished basement and my drum set was set up down in a room that had two walls as foundation walls, and it could be heard, albeit faintly, outside if one stood in the right spot.  I would expect a rifle to be considerably louder.

Surprised this Nazi wasn't caught in the process of destroying that steel backing plate.

Canada declared war on Germany in September 1939, after a German torpedo destroyed a passenger ship, killing a woman from Quebec: the only time Canada has ever declared war on its own.

Amazing that the death of a single citizen can spur a country to declare war on another. These days, 400,000 dead is an acceptable price to pay for another 4 years of Trump for 70 million Americans.

The Canadian government's tepid attempts to pursue war criminals had ended by 1948, when the Allies decided that efforts should focus on "discouraging future generations" rather than prosecuting escaped Nazis, or in the words of the British Commonwealth Relations Office, "meting out retribution to every guilty individual."

And that's why we're in the mess we're in today.
Let's not make the same mistake our grandparents did.
Wipe the Nazis out for good this time.

The engineering to keep it quiet isn't too hard, exhausting the air inside the range tunnel and keeping it quiet is harder. However, might not be illegal to fire a gun in this suburb. It wouldn't have been in one I lived in. Southern US, if course. I grew up with guns, but I'm not a fan nowadays. In the past a non-Nazi indoor range would have seemed cool. Post crazy times, when I can pick up a cheapish decent and new shotgun, I intend to take up skeet and trap with my oldest friend's son in law. He's not a hunter, but loves that shiat, and my buddy doesn't, but loves the kid. The kid reloads, and I'm cheap, so I'm tagging in.

Canada was smart enough to recognize then what a threat the Nazis were to everyone who weren't Nazis themselves, and is smarter than the US now. Well, at least half of it anyway.

So now we know where all the Nazis in the US came from. After the war Canada collected and bred them to ensure that the endangered species wasn't wiped out. The program was a success.

Well... TFA stated that somebody cleaned up after the Nazi.

... On his first visit as a prospective buyer, he said, the seller had told him of the major cleanup they'd done on the place; there had been a mannequin dressed in full Nazi uniform in the office. Two hundred and eighty-eight guns were removed, ...

I'm guessing that whomever cleaned up either found the combination, or had a peon brute-force it.

I wonder if this is reverse cop math?

288 guns removed...of the 435 they originally found in the stash.

"What aboot that MP-40, eh?"

"You can have it. I already put 2 in my car!"

Wonder how many of the guns were just outright illegal to own in Canada?  Also, I suspect the Nazi made a lot of trips to gun shows in the US to build that collection.

Another Government Employee: Given this is Canada, how did Dead Nazi manage to hoard that many guns without the authorities catching on? When did the laws begin to tighten?

There is nothing restricting how many guns someone can own once they are licensed.

If you don't show off or use an illegal gun then odds of the police finding it drop to near zero.

Yeah. A few years back the nazis saw there was a large counter march ready for their march and said they would rebook their march for another day, in another city. So polite to make way for the others!

Especially after the march turned into a brawl the last time they tried it, and it did not go well for the nazis.

Amazing and wrong. Wars don't get declared over single citizens. Single citizens are excuses to declare war that belligerents already want to declare.

Canada declared war separately after the UK did by 7 days as a pointed gesture of independence. It had nothing to do with a single casualty. The article is mistaken, and the correct information is not difficult to find.

Same as the tulips -- that was an acknowledgement for a bunch of things, particularly for declaring a piece of Canadian soil as basically temporary international soil, so the exiled Juliana's baby was born solely a Dutch citizen. Otherwise, the kid might not have been eligible for succession. There are numerous other diplomatic gifts and acknowledgements related to the liberation, though.

The government already had a bunch of groundwork in place like the War Measures Act, price controls, rationing and censorship, and a bunch of other stuff, well before the declaration. People knew war was coming.

Pretty sure the 'Nazi lair' is some weirdo collector's hoard.  Might have also liked Nazi shiat more than simple historical interest, but no surprise there.

The writer doesn't know the basic facts, and didn't bother to confirm a bunch of them.

Internment camps are for Canadian citizens, that was for Canadian Nazis like Adrien Arcand and various nationals considered enemy aliens. They are not the same as POW camps.

My bullshiat detector is going off on the secret Nazis numbers because after a point you had to be in the party. It's like declaring every immigrant from the former Bloc as a secret Communist. It's bullshiat. He's also misrepresenting the change in priorities after the Gouzenko Affair, and the change in immigration restrictions in the 1950s.

shiat, my roommate's grandfather built a shooting range under his house. It was a whole thing in the mid-century, it's not that weird.

I expect this is tarting up a personal account of his injury and recovery with added 'historical significance'. It's unnecessary. His life is worth talking about if he says it is, like anybody's life.
