Nice comeback on the Caps, too!

THIS, really. Goalies get the assists often enough.

Getting a goal, on the other hand, is a tad bit rarer.

Still, nice play.

Awesome play.

Nice little deek and head fake on the goal too.

It looked like Alex Ovechkin's controller got disconnected again.

5-4 win in OT.  Pens beat the Caps.

All is right in the world.

Even an assist is pretty rare for a goalie.  Usually it happens once or twice a season.  Goals by a goalie are only on empty-nets and EXTREMELY rare (only 2 goalies have ever scored more than 1)

Record holder for assists by a goalie in career is Tom Barrasso... with 48.  He played for 18 seasons, so even the record holder only averaged 2.5 per season.

And with the rules they put in place about 10-15 years ago where goalies can only touch the puck in that trapezoidal area makes it quite a bit harder than in the past, so that record probably won't be broken.  (Obviously if you're in front of the goal like DeSmith in this video, you can still touch it anywhere, but having a clear lane to fire it up like that from that spot is rare).

But going back to this... I read the other day that this is only the 3rd 3 on 5 short handed goal in pittsburgh penguins history!  So plenty of rarified air on this play.

It took me a few times of watching it, don't feel too bad about it. :)

I was all set to tell you that Ron Hextall had six goals in his career, I knew he was the first but for some reason I thought he had a bunch of them. Alas, I was wrong.

It really does seem like the number of goals by goalies should be higher due to empty nets, at least it does to me.

The other 2 were Matt Cooke (Against the Flyers) and Richard Park (Against the Islanders)

And Barasso got most of his assists in the era when making a save, then Murphy/Coffee/Samuelsson cleaning up the rebound, dumping it to a streaking Lemiuex/Francis/Jagr and them scoring on the rush.  He'd get the secondary assist because the 90s Penguins were all about run and gun.

I'm just impressed the Bruins have 2 even-strength goals tonight. I still havent seen one, I turned the game on and they tied it on the PP😄

For reference, see how many goals the folks with regular sticks score from that end of the ice and it might help define how hard it is for you.
