Real conservatives vote Dem and gave since Clinton.

That's part of the problem right there

FTFA: conservative ideas...no longer risk being held hostage to whatever he was personally interested in on a particular day, or whatever he kicked up in opposition to himself either...He made it affirmatively impossible to pursue right over wrong unless you were willing, to at least some limited extent, to play ball with him or avoid directly confronting him

Yup. Cults of personality really suck ass. The BAD kind.

So, let me guess:

Tax cuts for the rich
Large boost in defense spending
Cuts in social programs to balance out the deficit caused by 1&2?
Restrictions on voting to make sure "those" people stay home
Something something abortion to keep the God botherers in line without actually stopping their mistresses and daughters from being able to get one

Did I miss anything?

I got this far:

"...advance good causes over bad ones: life, liberty, the Constitution, economic opportunity, individual choice, civil liberties, national strength and security, among others."

That is farking hilarious.

Yep. Because the Dems have shown they are far better on actually delivering on those ideals, than the cash-shoveling GOPers who have only one thing on their mind: power.

Real Conservatives?  Like Dick Cheney, Bill O'Reilly, Karl Rove Conservatives?   This is not an upgrade.

"Real conservatives" are just Trumpists who still believe in plausible deniability.

For real conservatives, the only problem with Donald was he said the quiet part out loud.

2021-01-21 3:11:44 PM
Turns out, real conservatives couldn't stop a church lady at a stop sign with a cross, a sob story, and a donation bucket. They have as much pull as a rusted-out moped, and as much say as a mute in a library.

Who farking cares what they think as a group, any more than we care about left-handed swing-dancing anarchist bocce fans?

// it's either that or most of the real conservatives actually support Trump

People who farking hate trump and know how much of a corrupt ass he is voted for him nevertheless because of that R.

"Real conservatives" can blow me until they can get past party politics

No.  Fark this.  Trump gave conservatives everything on their wish list.  I refuse to let them play the No True Scotsman card now to disavow him.  No.

Dub. Because the Dems are the center-right conservative party.

The Rumps are far right extremists.

But since both are capitalist they remain codified by our capitalist government and capitalist media as the only two legitimate schools of political thought.

None of those are actual policies. They are just buzzwords

life = anti-abortion
liberty = cut regulations
the Constitution = cut regulations
economic opportunity = cut regulations, break unions, cut taxes
individual choice = cut regulations, break unions
civil liberties = no gun control
national strength = raise police and military budgets
Nation security = shield police from liability among others = cut taxes

In a weird way, they're right.  Just not the way they think they are.  A lot of centrist Dems and the few remaining centrist GOPers were very happy to see Trump leave.  And those are where all of our conservatives are.

Reactionaries are pissed or hurt.  Liberals are thrilled.  And progressives/leftists have moved from wide-eyed rage and exasperation to that tired exhaustion you fall into 12 hours after spending all night up with a family of angry badgers.

Wasn't there just an article about how a majority of Republicans in the house voted to overturn the election? This is just more messaging. Republicans are Trump. Trump are Republicans. The venn diagram is a circle.

They'll end up with another fascist before long. It's like they don't understand that Trump was a direct consequence of all of their actions. He is the culmination of the conservative movement, and someone like him always will be. They've spent decades pissing in a bucket and are shocked that they ended up with a bucket of piss and not lemonade. That won't stop them from trying again though.

No, it's like they think they can convince us he wasn't a direct consequence of their actions.

I have yet to hear more than half of one half-baked idea that could possibly count as a "conservative" ideal that doesn't ultimately boil down to plutocracy, white supremacy, evangelical Christian nationalism, autocracy or fascism specifically or in some combination.  Usually through some basic belief in "natural hierarchies" - the belief that some people are simply inherently better than others, and are identified by success, skin tone, or superficial religious trappings.  Conveniently, these are already the people with all the wealth & power, justifying their selfishness through perverted Darwinism.

The one half-baked idea that didn't boil down to this was fear that "liberals" always want to "destroy history", like the CCP and Soviet Union did.  While they're not wrong about what those governments did (even though the CCP and Soviet Union never really qualified as anything remotely "communist" no matter what they called themselves), it's not like so-called conservatives haven't whitewashed our history to hell and back already, anyway.

Other than that, I have yet to hear anything even slightly sensible that's a "conservative ideal".  Hard work?  Self-reliance?  You only believe that social programs are the opposite of that because Republicans lied to you about it so they could give that money to their friends, instead.  Family values?  Don't make me laugh.  Sociologists have known for decades that the best things you can do for any sort of family, nuclear or otherwise, is make sure they can pay their bills, and after that make sure their kids get a good education... both things that Republicans have ruthlessly opposed for three full generations.  Patriotism?  From the party that thinks filibustering every appointment is their job as "opposition" but immediately uses terms like "un-American" and "America-hating" whenever anyone tries to express an opinion different from theirs.

Maybe things just suck so hard, and have for so long, and have been getting relentlessly worse for so many of us for so long, I just don't see the value in "conserving" any of that.  The only change we've been getting is regressive, back to 1920s economics and 19th century bigotry and 12th century politics.  I'm not afraid America is going to turn into something culturally unrecognizable... because it already has, in a very bad way, and I'm not even 50 yet.

Not sure. A boy can grow up?

There's nothing inherently wrong with a party that's actually conservative provided that they aren't the "leftmost"political mainstream expression. After the Republicans signed on to outright Nazism and insurrection, the Dems are the conservative party. There are no "left"
