I kind of like the idea of a very large park/garden with statues of worthy people in it.  Detailed plaques describing what they achieved and their benefits to society.  Alas the group of people who should pick who gets a statue is not tRump's pets, in fact the pickers should have almost nothing to do with politics and more to do with history.

Mind you I guess the park could be split into areas, where one area can be the walk of traitors.

In 50 years, many of the statues will be of people who don't deserve statues. Our perception of right and wrong change over time.

I do find it rather funny that the author is under the impression that Seuss is not controversial.

The writer seems petty with a couple of those. Dow is blamed for things his company did decades after he died? The guy that invented economical fracking destroyed the planet and not centuries of industrialization and a collective refusal to change?
I agree that they don't deserves heroic statues, but they're not monsters.

What no Nathan Bedford Forrest?

I don't think we need more statues to clean, maybe use the money for schools so kids can learn about these people. So good riddance this thing isn't getting built.

He'd do it but in the cheapest way possible and pocket the rest of the cash. Think Saul Goodman's constitution-themed office in a strip mall.

I think there should be a National Garden of Real American Heroes and Real Men of Geniuses.

A monument built to every one of Bud Light's radio ad spots.

I mean, some of those people are genuine geniuses. Colt is at least as brilliant a manufacturer as Henry Ford, and Dow can hardly be blamed for what happened to his company later on.

That said, industrialists and technocrats don't deserve "heroic" statutes...nor do artists, visionaries, or game-show hosts. Neither Geisel nor Trebek was a hero by any stretch of the imagination.

This sounds more like some middle-school's list of "famous people" where kids just toss out names of people they've heard of, without any thought for what they did, or why. Being "famous" doesn't mean they were "heroes" and it doesn't mean they deserve some kind of permanent memorial.

That Capitol police officer who led the mob away from the Senators was a bona fide hero, and will likely get no more recognition than being Kamala Harris's bodyguard at her inauguration. Alex Trebek was a nice guy who didn't deserve to die the way he did; but he was not a hero.

It'll be one of these with a large donation box out front. Whole web pages will be devoted to various conspiracy theories on how the libs manage to always keep it closed.

I've always thought of the National Parks as our National Garden of American Heroes.  Why don't we just increase their budget by however much Trump wanted to spend on his dumb garden idea?

Any "garden of heros" with f*cking Billy Graham in it is a pisstake.

Ah yes, Potemkin Village -- all optics, no substance.

It's Trump's most essential business philosophy: Fake it til you make it (but you never really make it so you're always faking it, forever).

Things over in "mainstream" "freeper" land are.. weird right now. The insurrection was very much a "dog catches the car" moment. It hurt them and they have no idea what to do. I listen to the local right wing radio as oppo research, religion on the weekends but on weekdays its hannity, levin, america first, fox, etc. They have drastically ramped up the commercials, very few content breaks, and except for the national personalities which remain themselves their actual news segments are already tossing Trump to the wolves.

Is it going to include all of the Christopher Columbus statues taken down over the past year? It'll save money on production costs.

This was a coloring book they'd give Diaper Don to play with while the evil adults worked.

Great idea. A statue garden, like the Capitol Rotunda, only outside, with no Congressional offices to ransack and loot -- so the giftshop will make more.

Sure, but the Whitney Houston statue would have always been in fashion.

Presidential Libraries are run under the auspices of the National Archives. It *will* be built.

Fundraising goes towards the details of architecture and esthetics and land purchase and other such mundane details.  But there will be a Trump Presidential Library, eventually, somewhere.

Sorry.

Also, the plot of land that this travesty was to be built on was chosen to be a finger in the eye of "the Left".  It was planned to take land from from the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (and apparently the Bureau of Printing and Engraving is also going to take a chunk for the BARC a new facility, so the Trump Misadministration's hostility to Basic Science lives on), and is also hard against Greenbelt, MD, one of Eleanor Roosevelt's planned communities.  So putting a bunch of Capitalist Icons in memoriam right next to it is a big FU to their Co-operative form City governance, too, damn commies.

I know all of this because I live just five miles away from Greenbelt, and most of my social circle lives there.

NathanAllen: Also, we already have a National Sculpture Gallery, National Art Galleries and so on.

If you want to see great sculpture outdoors try the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden.

And while there is no actual "National Sculpture Gallery", The National Gallery of Art has excellent works in both wings.  The modern works in the East Wing (and indoors at the Hirshhorn) are particularly nice.  Frankly, in my opinion, the East Wing itself (designed by I. M. Pei) is itself a gigantic sculpture.  The National Gallery also has a Sculpture Garden which is very nice, but I prefer the one at the Hirshhorn.  Your mileage my vary, of course.

Ah, the perks of having grown up in Maryland a stone's throw away from DC.  The mall and museums are great places to hang out as a teen.

Actually, The Library must be funded privatey, with an endowmnet to pay NARA to run it.  So the posts above were correct - there will be a ton of money laundered raised, but the actual building will be shiatty and the endowment will be the bare minimum.
