Because it's a drug for them. The same way that bears and birds will chase down fermented fruit. Animals like getting high too. Heck, dolphins play and eat pufferfish to get high.

I enjoyed that the tests included big cats at the zoo also being given catnip.

Big cats also want a steak, or a cheeseburger, or both, now that they've got the munchies.

So they want to synthesise it for mosquito repellant?  Personal spray or yard fogger?  Either way you run the risk of being overrun by a herd of high feral cats.

Feeding a high clowder can get expensive.

My cat doesn't seem to care for catnip. To compensate, she loses her mind over this one pizza box that I now cannot throw out. It is empty and closed, but she will lay atop it and roll around like a fool.

*offer void in Australia

The response to catnip is hereditary, and Australia's founding population didn't have that response....
A vet friend once told me 80% of cats elsewhere in the world respond to it, but in Australia 80% don't.

I have 3 catnip plants that my cats completely ignore. They really enjoy the wheat grass though.

Protip: don't waste your money on cat grass. Go to a seed supplier and order a couple of pounds of wheat grass. It'll last you a couple of years.

Can confirm.

Cat I had growing up went CRAZY for this "leather" handbagmy mother bought in Tijuana. You show her the purse, she'd purr, meow, rub against it. No matter what mood she was in, once the bag came out, it was stoned loved up kitty time.

Catnip, nope, no response; Mexican leather bag, it was like she was seeing her long lost sister.

Which it probably was.
