(CBS Sports)   Strange: 62-year-old Derrike Cope will race at Daytona. Cool: He only won it in 1990. Obvious: his left turn blinker will be on the whole time   (cbssports.com) divider line

Don't be silly subby. That track is all left turns. His RIGHT turn signal will be blinking.

Well I sure hope they cancel the farmer's market they usually have in turn four.

Is it weird that I needed clarification as to whether this was the 24 hour race or the 500?

Strange seeing one I remember. I was a big Cup fan until Earnhardt got killed, then drifted away. I remember Cope's win.

I'm pretty sure it's the 500 mile one. The 24 hour race would cut in to his daily nap.

If I remember right, Cope took the lead and won after Earnhardt cut a tire on the last lap.

Yep, that's no big mystery.  Right place, right time.  It's still a mystery how something that ugly produced those twins.

I remember exactly what I said when I found out Cope won that race:

Who?

I was but a casual fan.

Subby, I think you're onto something.

It would be a good promo if they installed a right turn signal and it was blinking the whole time. They'd have to get permission from NASCAR and the other drivers because it could be a distraction.

Certainly would crack a few people up, though.

The '90s were the best time to be a NASCAR fan. I hated Earnhardt. I was a Mark Martin guy, but when Earnhardt died NASCAR died.

I've got an idea! Let's make all the cars identical and hire only go-kart champions with no personality that haven't paid any dues! Yay!

Goodbye.

This is where I point out that Angela and Amber Cope are his nieces, not his daughters....so he didn't.

Well, we don't have a lot of moonshiners to recruit from anymore.

Do 2004 racing tactics still hold up 17 years later?
He'll blow an engine before lap 100 just trying to keep up.

And he still has that awesome mustache. I'm impressed.

I was also a Mark Martin guy and I pretty much stopped following it after Mark quit driving full time.  The guy was still competitive until he retired.  Anyway I never really found a new driver though I casually root for Chase Elliott due to him being Bill's kid.

/Still go to the Twins in Daytona and Homestead once a year because both are fairly close and it has been a family tradition for like 20 years.  Good times even if I'm not really rooting for anyone anymore.

As long as he has his Richard Petty drool rag in his mouth the whole time, he'll be mint..
