Ironically, it doesn't handle or shoot fire like a flamethrower, because it's just a propane torch with stupid branding that appeals to weird nerds. It's not a toy, but it's certainly not a weapon, and it's a dumb fundraising for a billionaire who doesn't need to do fundraising stunts to raise money, but only to raise his public profile because he's the end product of an expensive marketing campaign. He's not selling propane torches with a massive markup, he's selling the fiction of "Elon Musk, Real Life Tony Stark".

"It's a toy they sell to children."

Cool, so he has no problem with me selling his kids my, My Little Pony throwing knives and Barbie themed Nyquil.
/This is just a toy for adults who have no farking clue.

Unless it shoots a ten meter jet of flame, it's not a flame thrower.  It's a propane torch with a useless form factor.

If it didn't look like a scary gun, nobody would care.  But let's not pretend "looks like a scary gun" wasn't a selling point, or they'd have these.

I find those propane torches generally useless against weeds.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong, it takes forever to do even a small patch.

It has more range than a propane torch.

On the one hand, some cigarette lighters could be used as a weapon. On the other hand, this could be used as a weapon a lot more easily.

Is it more of a collectible than a weapon? Sure... but I wouldn't bring it with me on public transit.

A real flamethrower sprays liquid, not gas.

WelldeadLink: A real flamethrower sprays liquid, not gas.

Spot on. It is a torch that propels propane/butane gas. It is technically the same thing every working farm has around to clear brush - it just looks like a gun.

Flamethrowers spray and ignite a viscous liquid, typically napalm which is a partially jellied/thickened gasoline. If you can safely discharge your 'flamethrower' inside your house, it isn't a flamethrower.

My friend's neighbor uses one with a more focused attachment and it works very well. He's 80 and probably going to burn the house down, but damn, the edge of his grass is perfect!

I used to feel the same, with a Map-Pro torch (TS8000 series) but now I have a 500k BTU bastard, and it is fantastic, so long as I stop as soon as the weeds start to wilt. Don't let them burn up, that just acts like pulling off a leaf. You need to make the weed commit resources to trying to heal. Whole thing needs to be *just* wilted. Give it a few days, and the weed is dead all the way to the root, as if it was hit with roundup.

What model do you have?  My wife hates me using Round-Up, but it does the job is done in fifteen minutes versus three hours with the torch.

Craddock had been arrested in the Sardinian port city of Olbia in June 2018 after trying to board a private party bus with a collectible flamethrower from Elon Musk's latest startup, The Boring Company. Craddock had painted his flamethrower black, and written on it the name of a floating music festival in the Bahamas he had attended the previous year while starring in reality TV show Unanchored

It's been a nice run humanity.

Puglio: It has more range than a propane torch

I mean, kind of. It's purposefully burning badly so that you get a more visible plume, because a good propane torch should have an almost entirely blue flame. That bright orange is a sign that it's not using the fuel efficiently and isn't nearly as hot as it should be. I mean, you could still start flammable stuff on fire with it, but that's also true of an aerosol can.

Also, if you want range, use the wasp killer. That's a more effective flamethrower than this.

Ridiculously overpriced? Yep.

Did I half want one? Yep.

Did I know that the police and judges here (Australia) would have no hesitation? Yep.

Did I know that Customs would certainly have a problem with it if they found it? Definitely.

Did I get one? No...
