(Twitter)   It seems a promotional image for the upcoming Eternals movie has been leaked showing the full cast in their costumes. They look pretty good and since presumably none of them will be yelling about Martha it should be worth seeing   (twitter.com) divider line

I've been a comic fan for 30 years now but for the life of me there's no Eternals story or character I can recall other than Ceres being in the Avengers for a while. Kind of feel the way everyone else felt about Guardians of the Galaxy with this one. I'm sure the original Kirby stuff was good, but so was all the Fantastic Four and we all know how those went.

I vaguely recalled one of the people Squirrel Girl hangs out with is a supermodel who can change her weight at will.

Sersi (who I'm pretty sure you meant by Ceres) is in this, played by Gemma Chan.

The Eternals are interesting but just obscure enough that switching up races and genders won't raise any eyebrows except among the small percentage of usual haters. So it's an excellent starting point for adding more diversity without sacrificing a bit of MCU goodness and story opportunities. I'm looking forward to this one!

Pretty much the same here.  Except it was Sersi in the Avengers. But I'm now interested in getting into the comics because I found out that Gaiman did a limited series about them.  Odds are those are the versions they are basing the movie on.

The problem with the Eternals is that Marvel already had a pre-existing set of canon gods with the Asgardians and a Big Three character in Thor taking the spotlight for the sort of tales the Eternals are appropriate for.  Additionally, the Celestials were never really explored as having any great impact in the MU aside from random appearances where their mere presence was supposed to intimidate, until the Earth X miniseries put them into conflict with Galactus as the over-arching explanation for the *entire* Marvel universe and the existence of super-powered beings.

And then they dumped the canonicity of that story by saying it's a future that doesn't happen.

So, Marvel Comics has never really known what to do with the Eternals or Celestials but as they were Kirby creations they're kept around as a legacy property they put out a miniseries for every generation to retain the copyrights for *in case* a writer comes along that can use them well.

Or for a movie; with hopefully a clearer and stronger impact on the MCU than they had on the MU.

I'm praying like a sinful bastard on his deathbed they take up the Celestials vs Galactus storyline as the way they bring in the FF.

Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. did an Eternals story back in 2006 to 'update' them during Civil War. Currently available as a TPB.

I mean, you're not wrong about most of the Eternals stuff not being memorable. But, I think the key here is bringing in the Deviants, building to a major story arc that ties the new, incoming properties (X-Men and Fantastic Four) to the MCU and quickly gets them 'in the thick of things', as they say.

The Marvel Knights animated series I linked above is just that.  And it works very well.  So far as I can see, that is more or less the model story they will be using.

Eternals was one of those Kirby Koncepts that sounded good in a pitch meeting but couldn't get off the ground (2001, anyone?). Not to mention the subtext of eugenics, which they'll have to scrub hard to get out.

Hope we can see this in the theater, because Celestials won't have much impact on a TV. YMMV depending on screen size.

The eugenics angle would work if they hadn't removed Agents of SHIELD from canon.

But those Inhumans were just stand-ins for mutants, and are no longer needed, sadly.

Also, aside from Iron Man and War Machine; pretty much ALL of the MCU costumes look like ass to me.  Ikaris really needs the red touches, imho.

And, ignoring issues of race-changing an such; why is it so damned difficult for actors to dye their hair to look like the character they choose to portray?

One of the few good consequences of the Corona lockdown. Apparently he just got obsessed with working out at home. The interviews with him and his wife are adorable.

I agree with almost all of that, including that the show might be good, but as far as the comics are concerned the bolded bit is a goddamned lie.

There's a reason not a single person in this thread remembered what their deal even was without looking it up, it was the most painfully generic "the DM is out of ideas but there's still a game sessions scheduled" vague science fantasy nonsense mathematically possible.  These were the people so boringly generic in concept and motivation that they made the weird-ass cosmic end of comics stultifying.

Henry Cavill's mustache has some opinions about this.

Yeah, it's obvious Kirby was trying to recreate the New Gods for Marvel but he'd shot his wad already.
