Voting rights reform, nationwide.

It should be super easy and fast (and auditable) to vote.
And we should have an election week, at least one day of which is a federal holiday, rather than a single day.

Those Gentleman's Agreements that have held government together really ought to become laws. Also, the Legislative Branch needs an actual enforcement arm since DoJ can be compromised by the Executive and hinder investigations into potential misconduct.

As has been pointed out here numerous times, Trump is the symptom of a larger political decay and exposed some systemic problems that we will need to address. No argument there.

That said, I do think Trump himself is sort of a singular phenomenon. His followers love him precisely because he is a stupid, obnoxious asshole. Most stupid, obnoxious assholes don't come with the pre-built media access that he does, and most don't have the incredible good fortune to be running against a person who had a whole cottage industry defaming them for decades beforehand.

We should absolutely be vigilant against the next Trump. But I think the Republicans are going to have a much harder time than people think finding him.

Laws that require any candidate for federal and state office must submit their tax returns and financial paperwork, to be on the ballot. No exceptions.

Laws that violating oath of office is a federal felony.  (is this already a thing? Sure seems like it isn't)

Almost all of our institutions and systems are broken. What we need to do is look around the world, find institutions and systems that work the best and generate the best outcomes, and then implement them here.

And that way if anyone whines about not liking the decision, a justification of "this is what works best, if you have something proven to work better, let's talk about it, otherwise why should we settle for second best in the greatest country in the world?" is really all you need.

Pushing systems and ideas that are proven failures only leads to jaded, cynical voter base, which leads to Trumps.

Structural changes to enable viable third party candidates. Nationwide adoption of runoff voting would probably be the easiest to implement.

Plenty of Republicans voiced opposition to Trump, many due to his authoritarian tendencies, prior to it being clear it was either Trump or the Democrats in the White House. Far too many people then simply decided to gamble that he wouldn't actually be that bad.

In 2016 I could very well have imagined a compromise candidate winning if everyone wasn't afraid that a vote for a third-party was a vote for the opposition.

My objection here is that, of course, Republicans just flat out lie about what works and have systemically been working to break American government for decades.  I think getting smart people to make the kinds of changes you're talking about is crucial along side expelling the worst offenders from Congress and putting a noticeable number of folks in jail.

Agreed. Trump is a cult of personality - those don't just grow on trees. And frankly, our system is quite good at weeding out the potential ones that don't come with preternatural media manipulation skills and a massive inheritance. So I think the short-term ('24) danger is low. But the next decade or two will be dangerous as hell.

I think a lot of his voters were people who didn't want a "career politician" and the GOP said "Well, we don't have anyone else who's polling this high, so let's give him a shot."

I'm not sure the redneck base and their mistrust of politicians could be brought to vote for someone who wasn't "their kind". He'd have to be insidiously crafty to walk that line and appeal to the $$$ men because bubba and his ilk won't have the money to bankroll who they really want.

A constitutional amendment limiting the executive pardon power.

1) No pardoning yourself ever.

2) No pardons for family members without Congressional approval.

3) No "preemptive pardons" or "blanket pardons" without Congressional approval.  This means a crime needs to have been committed and a person charged and found guilty for them to qualify for a pardon without Congress involved.

4) No pardons for crimes that were committed or where the person was found guilty if either event occurred after the national election that elected the President until the time they leave office without Congressional approval.  This means you can't get your friends, relations, and co-conspirators off the hook unless Congress agrees to get them off for you.  This window is forever, if you're elected for a second term, concurrently or not, you can't pardon from your first terms window either.

5) Congressional approval is a simple majority in both houses, a house failing to hold a vote within 90 session days of being petitioned for one is considered to have given approval.

This is why I have an insane conspiracy theory that Obama, the Clinton's, et al worked to get trump elected.  They knew his level of complete incompetence and that he'd screw up the power the GOP had worked so hard to get.  Yes, there were a lot of casualties along the way, but not so many as if Hilary had won and had to go against the GOP apparatus that existed in 2017.  Now the GOP has destroyed themselves in a way that would have never happened if any of the other 2016 GOP contenders had gotten into office.

These seven posters all posted at least one unconstitutional suggestion.  And, no, you aren't gonna amend the constitution to fix this shiat.

The root cause of this problem is the existence of states, the Senate, the Electoral College and the fact that states don't have to have the same population or anything close to such.  So, this gives an oversized amount of power to the states that are low population, most of which are rural.  And most rural voters are conservative.  This makes the Republican Party, and conservative policies in general, much more powerful than they should be.

There are no easy solutions.

Some possible (but very unlikely) ones include:

1. Have millions of excess liberals move from California and New York to swing states or these empty rural states or both.  California and New York will stay blue, but 10-20 red or purple states will also turn blue.

2. Split California and New York into dozens of smaller, mostly liberal states.  The State of Downtown Los Angeles, the State of Riverside, the State of West Hollywood, the state of San Francisco.

Of course, both of these aren't going to happen either.

Basically, we're farked.  Hence my moderate standpoint on a lot of things; I'm a realist that we are farked, and think we need to grab every small victory we can take.

A smarter, better looking, more polite candidate would just be another highfalutin elite. He wouldn't inspire the rabble the way Trump did.

A true populist needs to have an array of bad qualities to endear himself to the peasants and be enough of a buffoon that most people don't take him seriously until its too late.

Trump didn't do what he did in spite of his horrible flaws, but because of them.

I believed during much of 2016 there was a chance that Bill Clinton and Trump had some sort of Trading Places-style one dollar bet that Trump could act like a moron and still win.  But during one of the debates I saw how much Hillary and Trump simply hated each other (the flames coming out of both of their ears left burn marks on my television) and decided that this wasn't possible.

Take one of the US island territories, the kind that was an airstrip and fuel depot in WW2/Cold War and nothing more, ship a crate of guns and a crate of ammo. Then start going down the voting rolls, deport every member of congress with an (R) after their name, every republican voter, and start shipping them to that island. Boat doesn't stay; No boats or planes off the island. Let the republicans live out their libertarian ayn rand lord of the flies fantasy there.

Republicans have proven themselves to be a terrorist threat. They need to be dealt with, one way or another. Eliminate the republican menace and you eliminate the possibility for another fascist coup attempt, or another wannabe dictator like Trump.

Yeah. This sounds bad. But just think about it as a delayed reaction; We're just finishing up what should have been started in 1865; Not a single confederate should have been left breathing. Now, in 2021, the republican party might as well be called the Confederate States Party; They hate the USA, hate democracy, and hate the fact that in principle, every man woman and child should have the same freedoms.

1. Maximum age for all electable federal position. Minimum for POTUS is 35. Set a maximum of 65 for that and everything else: Congress, Senate, VP, SCOTUS. No more old farts in power. If you are eligible for AARP then it's time to start packing your bags.
2. Congressional term limits. Maximum time of 12 years, so 6 terms as Congressperson and 2 terms as Senator
3. Electoral college votes distributed by percentage of popular vote instead of single block. It will then be more representative of the population and can actually begin to show third party candidates are feasible.
4. Eliminate Citizen's United.
