Ah, the yearly cicada story. A little earlier than usual.

Hopefully we can get back to more "not news" not news and less of anything political.

Last time we had a big swarm I remember my buddy thought it would be funny to shake a tree in his yard against my advice. I went back to his house swiftly and locked him out of the house and watched the pandemonium and he ran valiantly swatting and yelling as he charged the patio door.

I watched contently as he ran around the house to hide in his car. After a few minutes I went out to check on him. Hilarity did not ensue.

Oh no! A horrifying almost entirely harmless periodic insect emergence. We might have to wash the car more often barely survived the last one!!!1

Now I can date one of my most memorable camping trips to 17 years ago. That was the time we went to the Cohutta Wilderness and tried to sleep with cig butts in our ears and towels wrapped around our heads. I mean c'mon, we are pushing species down the tubes by the bushel basket and we haven't gotten this one yet?

We have hella cicadas every year. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Each brood is either 13 or 17 years old, but at least one brood emerges every year, here.

Nope. This is actually the heptadecennial cicada story.  This is the big one that happens every seventeen years.

I had just arrived in Cincinnati for the previous iteration in 2004.  Am happily in California this time.

They are probably annual cicadas.  Most areas don't have long term broods every year, it kind of defeats the purpose of having broods.

The vast vast majority of cicada species just come out when they're mature after a long time underground.

The organized mass of them every 13 or 17 years is unique to the eastern 2/3 of the usa.

This brood is by far the biggest.  What will happen in the places that have them this year is not what happens most years.
