As resident of Greenpoint please allow me to point out that in a better world (one without Hunter S Thompson always giving voice to his racist chauvinism, for example) Chisholm - the first African-American to seek the major party nomination and the first woman to appear in a presidential-nomination debate - assembled an unstoppable coalition of women, Blacks, freaks, young people and Democrats and kicked Tricky Dick's ass up and down the block in 1972 and humans, having conquered war, poverty, disease, pollution and other stupidities are currently testing FTL technology out beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Ah, well. Takes what we gets, I suppose. iPhones and Tesla it is. Go Kamala.

Cool!  So what's this country's plan about our racist police departments?  I hear that's maybe a problem that we should address.

Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to congress.

I had to look it up. Now that I did, I get why so many people were excited about that.

Shirley C was legend.

Love Lee's wearing the pearls to honor both Shirley's legacy and Kamala's future.

Wait...

... are we the good guys?

The first thing I see in the thread is racist language.

Is this website turning into 4chan lite or something? (we already got the pedo part of 4chan in fark and so seems like the next logical step).

A lot of us ladies are wearing pearls today as a tribute to our new VP.  Happy to do so.

I know, "welcome to Fark" and all, but ... seriously?

This woman was exceptional. Unworthy of 6th grade misogynistic humor.

It is way to dusty in here.  I should not be chopping onions.

A Dem staking claim to Shirley Chisholm is not quite as absurd as a Republican staking claim to Abraham Lincoln, but it's still crap.

Shirley Chisholm would be walking around tapping on shoulders, asking Dems why the hell they all jumped in bed with 1980s GOP economic policy and managed to get dragged so hard to the economic crackheaded-right.

Barbara Lee should be Speaker of the House.

Dems should take note of the "Unbought" part of her lasting legacy.

Think how much better our country could be today if Shirley Chisholm had been elected president in 1972.

Instead, we got farking Nixon. Again.

Make you co-op-er-ate with the rhythm, that is what I give 'em
Reagan is the pres but I voted for Shirley Chisholm
It might sound confusing, the style that I'm using
But in the end I'm sure that you will find it quite amusing

It's been a handful of hours.  I'm sure we can nail that centuries-old issue down in a day or so.

I was thinking it was Barbara Jordan from Houston, but it looks like she was a few years later. Chislom joined the House in '69. Jordan in '73. Jordan does have the distinction of being the only black woman to serve as a governor of a state (acting governor for a single day in 1972 through succession as President Pro Tempore of the Texas State State).

CSB: I saw Chisholm give a speech in 1972 in Macon, Georgia at Mercer University. She was a great and thoughtful speaker.

Pearl jam, pearl necklace, "nacre-philia" are to be expected on Fark, and, or course, there was way too much surname "discussion."

Props to the Farkers who treated the story with the respect it deserved.

That is the timeline that I've said on several occasions that I want to live in.

Was something deleted or is there a missing /s here?

Also, Barbara Lee is my rep and I'm always glad to get her messages letting me know what she's up to and asking for input.  A good, thoughtful member of the House.
