A website? PornHub?

2021-01-20 3:07:44 PM
I hate it when companies do that.  If my internet worked or I had electricity, do you think I'd be calling instead of visiting the website?  And the FAQ never answers my questions so I need to talk to a human anyway.

The website lists the phone number to call for information.

Eh. Other than scammers, who uses the phone for making actual calls anymore?

There're like thirty ways to get ahold of me on my phone without my actually talking to you. Use them.

Old people. A huge crossection of people aged 60+ (maybe younger) are not comfortable with technology, at all. I've been trying to get my mom to use her banking website and app but she can't seem to do things correctly without calling in to the automated teller line. That or she's starting to get dementia who knows...

Let me guess. The website directs them to the phone line?

I remember years ago there was some scammer that was running some financial freedom program and his website told people to buy his book and the book told people to look at his website.

You know why people are calling? Because the website probably sucks.

It was a bit of a shiatshow for me in NJ. I had received information to register with the state vaccine scheduling system. I was expecting that to be the system we would go to for registration at the 6 vaccination mega-sites. I was tipped off by a co-worker that the nearby mega site wasn't using the state system but instead using the system of the health care provider operating the site. I registered there, got a text on Saturday that the system was now open for appointments. Quickly got an appointment lined up for mid-March.

2 days ago, the system filled up and there are no more appointments available there.

I'm lucky, I'm tech savvy, privilige/have resources available... I missed the notice that went up on the county website, but managed to get an appointment booked.

But what about the people who aren't?

I did try calling the site directly on Friday, their phone banks weren't open. They weren't open over the weekend, and Monday was a holiday (I didn't try on Monday).

I say let Ticketmaster to StubHub manage web and phone appointments. Their business model is based on making it easy for you to find information performer, venue, seat, and get your information - credit card. Imagine giving your zip code and getting 5 or six places near you. Select one and an available time, then collect particulars on the person.

People who run businesses and need to get their employees or partners to resolve an issue/answer a question now instead of two days later.

Every time.  I renewed my home warranty last week and the on-hold told me about 30 times that I could renew online.  Well, the "Renew" on the webpage is just text and does nothing.  Maybe someone didn't bother to test it in Firefox.

Amazon does the same. Which is great because their FAQ to certain issues says to call them and speak with a representative.

What a sad life you must live where you think visiting New Jersey's garbage dump of a coastline is considered a "vacation." If Myrtle Beach is the Red Neck Riviera, then the Jersey Coast is a literal raging case of gonorrhea, syphilis, and herpes.

AT&T's local store does a thing where the phone rings for about 20 seconds, and then says "visit our website or leave a voicemail".  I hate it.  I'd rather sit on hold for twenty minutes instead of constantly hanging up and calling back.

You're implying that companies actually want to talk to you or help. These phone trees and website redirects are designed so they dont have to actually solve the problems of the filthy peasants who consume their shiat. It's pass the buck central.

The website directs people to the phone line, and the phone directs callers to the website?

That could keep Trumpers occupied for weeks.

The problem with these companies FAQ pages is that they either "answer" questions that the CEOs and executives think of, or that webmasters pull out of their collective sphincters.
What these jelloheads should do is take samples of the questions people ask them when they use their phone system and put the answers to THOSE questions on their site. That way they stand a better chance of giving people the info they want. Top 1000 questions get listed,

Of course that makes too much sense, so it ain't happening.

Bonus points if the Website directs them to Fax it in...

...To the original phone line number.

I'm eligible due to being a smoker.  Monmouth county doesn't have an appointment available through February.  Are not even booking for March yet. read today they only have 500 doses per day available to them.

Because of course herpes would.

I wish I could explain the logic behind NJ's vaccination program, but I cannot. As others have pointed out, you now have a registration site run by the state, registrations sites run by each county and then even more registration sites run by 3rd party satellite locations (hospital systems, corporate pharmacies,etc...)

Of course they not all interconnected so it's literally a free-for-all with people trying to register on multiple sites at various locations.

Having a phone message telling you to go to a website isn't even the tip of the iceberg to this insanity. Trying to get my septuagenarian parents registered on the State's website was a nightmare. The idea that I'd try to do it on at least 3 more sites? Who does that?

I give up - and I'm in the public health field.

Damnit, you just reminded me I have to call the cable company and ask for an outage credit and call the city and have 'em bring me a new trash can because the existing one was lit on fire before I moved in...

LeroyB: I don't have a hard-line phone. Can I send a telegram instead?

Not sure where to send one these days.  Though I did send a telegram in the 2010s when I was working field service and needed to check in with my boss, since there was an entire team waiting on me before going home for a long weekend.  Problem was they sent me to the middle of I couldn't even tell if it was nowhere, Kansas, where there was no cellular service or phone booths, and yet folks were weary of folks using their landline still.

No joke, I had been watching Bugs Bunny cartoons over breakfast that morning, and in one, Bugs received a Western Union telegram.  So while trying to work out how to get word back to the office that I got the job done and we can all go home, I spotted a Western Union.  Went inside, asked if telegrams were still a thing, and sure enough, it was, so I sent a telegram back to the office.  Apparently my message was printed out on a dot matrix on Western Union letterhead, and a hot-shot courier delivered it the last mile to the office.  I also turned in the receipt as a business expense because it was about as expensive as buying a classified ad in the newspaper...
