Yeah, you started a business without any sales leads, that's not your friends' fault.

F*ck off with your MLM bullshiat. You didn't start a company; you got scammed into a money losing pyramid schemes and now you are trying to scam your friends so you can recoup some of your losses.

Sorry you got laid off.

HA! Yup, that right there.

Hey, asking for a favor is just that. Asking.

If your best business plan consists of "hitting up my friends to be my customers or provide me professional services for free," you have no business plan and should stick to a career path that involves part time work at the Dollar Store or something at a similar level of rigor.

Assuming it isn't just a cult MLM, sometimes there are good reasons not to pimp for the business. Maybe your homemade crap isn't that good. Maybe its for a product they don't use. Maybe you are a bit of a dick and nobody would ever recommend you to anything because it would tarnish them - especially in a small town

maybe they have no faith in your product/service or you and they don't want to put their reputations on the line.

if 1 person tells you it's raining you might look out the window to confirm.  if 20 people tell you it's raining you can take it on faith you'll want to have an umbrella.

Why do the people that write questions to Slate always have major character flaws, or seem to be blissfully unaware of the realities of day to day living as an adult? I have friends that are realtors, and they have asked me to let them know about possible business opportunities, and I have. But.....they would never rely on me to provide them with all their leads. That's called "going to work"...

"I'm a SMALL BUSINESS OWNER and I demand respect!"

You sell purses, cheap clothes, and candles. Fark off. And where in the world did it become some sacred thing to just run a business? Who farking cares that you came up with a plan to sell fake eyelashes to stupid women? You're selling shiat that has no real purpose in the world, and you're nothing more than yet another distraction from meaningful life, selling your crap and hoping that you can find that all-important consumer niche that will make you rich. Maybe fake eyelashes will become BIGGER and BETTER, and you dream of that day. But in the meantime, you're a SMALL BUSINESS OWNER and you demand some respect!

This is what happens when you let business become more important than farking life.

This is true.  However, the inverse is not.  There are plenty of functioning (not thriving) tiny "businesses" that would not exist without the begrudging free support of family and friends, at least initially if not ongoing.

Look it was USB powered dildo warmer. So the dildo will always be at the correct temp. It even had slots for lube tubes that would also reach the target temp.
I mean...what's not to love.

It's a great product, but do I really need another? I mean, I only have so many ports that I can use at any given time.

I mean the way I read it, it being a small town and all, it's possible she supported her friends' MLM "businesses" and now that it's her turn she's not getting hers back.  Well duh, last in to the pyramid scheme is the one left holding all the losses, that's how those work.  Her town is tapped out for that scheme, time for a new one!  Or a real job.

1) Help Me, I've Got No Soul To Sell: Excuse me, but did you offer to compensate these people for their time and platform?  No?  They have no obligation, so STFU and GTHOI.

2) Keep On Using Me Until You Use Me Up: I can see the cultural embarrassment, but that doesn't mean you don't need to be more specific in your financial planning and knowing what this money is needed for.  Take control.  Or DTMFA.  Your call.

3) Good Enough For Now: I know a lot of folks who spend most of their time away from home really only care about a good place to sleep.  Having said that, a nicer place is relative and also I would wonder about long-term financial goals?  Would spending more now make it more difficult to upgrade later?  Is he looking at some cheap flop-house or are you looking for a luxury place?  More info or STFU.

4) I'll Hit You With My 20" Until You Cannot Stand: So you don't have a problem.  STFU, braggart.

5) Did They Get You To Trade Your Heroes For Ghosts?: Understand you miss who they were, not who they are.  I get that, I have that experience.  I assure you it's better left in the past.  GTHOI.

6) Dear God, Hope You Get The Letter And I Pray You Can Make It Better Down Here: Tell them to STFU or GTFO.

7) You're Sort Of Everything I Ever Wanted: Sometimes it's better to be alone than with a POS.  DTFMA.

8) I Jump In The Shower, Wash The World From My Back: Tell her in no uncertain terms to stop playing with the shower massage and GTFO.

Back in the day, when I had money, my nephew asked for a loan to start a business.  I asked if he had a business plan, or if he'd like my help in creating a business plan (as that was kind of my thing.)

He, of course, got all insulted with me.  He went on to lose all of his mother's money instead of mine.  I was shocked.

Funny how they never say what this business is, but I bet the pitch line goes something like "What if I said you could make $6000 a month working part time from home?"

I started a social media account portraying a luxury lifestyle and got in touch with a couple people with a simple request of send me a couple of pictures with you and your toys (both were into cars and I only wanted to use original content with attribution). One told me to grab a picture off of another account that he had posted on. The other never sent a thing.

Most small businesses go through tough times especially years 1-2.
First year shows how much you underestimated your startup capital. Second year tests how much you could go without getting a decent income for yourself*.

Things slowly pick up from there.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/oct/07/big-city-indifference-to-strangers-may-be-a-myth-study-suggests

Small town people are good at being nice on the outside.  A requirement to not be a loner.

Big city people are good at being indifferent on the outside.  A requirement to not being socially overwhelmed.

No impact on what's in their heart.

In 2000 a friend came over to pitch their MLM to my roommates and I.  It was called quixtar and I laughed at the whole thing and was very up front about the fact that there was no chance in hell I was having anything to do with it besides drinking beer and laughing at it.  My friends thought I was a fool for turning down fortunes to be made, and being a dick.  But they were farking wrong and there was not a single doubt in my mind at the time. Business owner my ass.

I don't have Facebook or Twitter but if I did I certainly wouldn't want to use it as a billboard for all of my friends business ventures

If I did it for one, then what if all of my other friends with businesses asked me to advertise on my social media?

I have two perspectives on this... neither of which are favorable to the asker.

1. Before kids I did a decent amount of freelancing. I had a small music studio business, where I was teaching private lessons a few nights per week and also did weddings/funerals and some arranging/transcription work. If a friend/family member needed something, it was always gratis unless they insisted on paying, and I asked them to just do what they thought was fair. It wasn't my job, but more importantly, it got me a crap ton of referrals for better paying gigs than what I would have asked for. It put me in touch playing with other musicians who could then also pull me in for decent-paying gigs where I just had to show up, play my music, and leave.

2. In my current job, I do have several old friends where they would be in a position to work with me. I DO NOT touch that unless they bring it up. It's skeevy as hell and puts people in an awkward position. Not worth it to me.

I'm of the firm belief that you have to create fans before you can create customers. If you want your circle of influence to pimp your product, hook them up, and if they like it they'll do it naturally. If you're asking them to scrape their contacts on social media to generate leads for you, you're in the wrong business and you should feel bad about asking that of your friends and loved ones.

There is no entitlement to success if you start a business, even if you work very hard at it, even if you're smart.

There is no special virtue to being a small business owner, it doesn't make you special.

Do it if you want but don't expect special favors.
