When life gives you freezing rain and snow, make a driveway luge run.

No, no, no. Winter is a thing you visit. You don't live there. You go, you play, you come home.

Dude needs some logger's cleats. My dad had them for over 40 years. Only fell on his chainsaw like 4 times and cut the flesh down to the bone. Broke his neck 3 times and had 3 heart attacks and a TIA. But he's still alive. Has nothing to do with the cleats, but couldn't hurt. My dad is 84 and still ticking. He HASN'T rolled into traffic, so there's a plus.

I forgot all about Ice Capades. Apparently they went out of business in the mid 90s.

Great fun to watch, not so much fun to do even if you don't break a hip or get plowed by oncoming traffic.  Ice-covered cement is not kind to your ass or whatever else you land on.  Less weeeeeeee and more ow fark shiat ow godma ow FFS motherfarkoof!

How do you get back up the driveway?

2021-01-20 2:32:34 AM
Apparently, LiveLeak is blocked by my work filters.. and I rarely hit the filters.

I remember about 8 years or so ago, going out to try and spread some salt on my driveway.  After a while, I thought, I'll head back now.  One step.. and I landed on my upper back between my shoulder blades.

I could feel the ache in there for a couple of years, usually while doing certain types of standup paperwork.

Of course it isn't.  No Real Iowan would use a farking salt shaker on that mess.  40-pound bags wouldn't be enough.

That is nature trying to tell him he ain't going nowhere.

Walk on the snow-covered areas on either side of the driveway.

Then you call a guy with a salt spreader on the back of his truck to salt the driveway.

Not gonna lie, I looked ahead on the video near the end just to make sure he wasn't getting hit by a car or something.

Nope, it was just a little bit of simple joy.

I thought the same, and guessed the snow.

Deicing that will suck. Dissolve salt in water, and pour it down?

As it is, he can't get to work using his car at least. Well once he can.

I thought for sure he was going to pick up the spare at the bottom of the driveway. Left disappointed.

It looks like a pretty steep driveway.  A pickup with a salt spreader probably isn't making it up the driveway.  The way he was doing it, by hand, is probably the best way, though he would have to spread it by walking up and down the hill on the snow next to the driveway, instead of what he tried.  And he'd better hope it's not too cold for the salt to be effective.  Or that it doesn't rain, washing all that salt down the hill, then refreeze, else he'll have to do it again.

I've had to work outside in the snow in the Sierras, but I don't understand how people do it in even colder places. Like how do you work outside in negative temperatures for months, and not just hate every single minute of it?

I've got a pail of rock salt, a bigger pail of sand, and a very corroded aluminum scoop.  Sometimes it's too cold for the salt, but the sand always provides some grip.

On the few occasions I've been house-hunting I've seen houses with walkways or driveways steep like this and my first thought is "That will suck in the winter".

Amateur.

Ours (we share it with 3 other houses) is 1/4 mile long, has a dog leg, and 13% grade. Private, so we pay for our own plowing and salting. We have lived here 27 years.  In that time, everyone in my family has slid down it in a car (can be fine at the top and only half way down do you discover a film of ice).

The trick is to go with it, and try to bounce the car tires off the snowbanks or unpaved edge of the road. I have done a very slow 720 on the way down. First time was terrifying, second was better. We have not wrecked a car yet, but the trick is to wait until the salt guy has been there, obviously.

New England...can't beat it!

I have a similar situation, not as long as you, but unfortunately, it's all mine.  We park at the top, by the road, if there's any snow at all on the driveway.  I slide down the 2nd half the first winter, before I knew better, and the only thing that kept me from continuing into the back yard was slowing down by bouncing repeatedly off the foot-high snowbank on the side of the driveway.

Last year, my GF tried pulling into the driveway just to turn around when parking at the top, lost it, slid all the way down, into the back yard, and was stopped by a small tree on the other side of the yard.  I was home at the time, and came outside when I hear the BAM!

You walk back up in the snow bank.

This is covered in chapter 2 of Winter 101.

I do not miss my parents driveway in Pittsburgh.  Fairly short, but a steep uphill away from house.  Wasn't uncommon to shovel 1/3 of the way up and slide back down into garage door.  Finally I got a pair of Yaktrax.   Fortunately ice storms were rare, so it was usually easy to melt with urea or salt.

The Googles Do Nothing: On the few occasions I've been house-hunting I've seen houses with walkways or driveways steep like this and my first thought is "That will suck in the winter".

It's amazing what you get used to.

Driveways tend to be easier than roads. At least YOUR driveway does. You've driven up and down it every day. You know exactly how fast you need to be at what point to make it up. A steady hand, a steady foot, and you're up. Generally you go up it in reverse so you can assess the situation and have some reaction time at the bottom when you go out again, especially in orrible weather.

My parents had a small farm in the country, about 30 miles south of Lexington, KY.  Very steep valley just before you got to our driveway.

Neighbors who live farther down the dead-end road would park at the top of the valley, walk a 1/4 mile to our house, and we'd give them a ride home (or they'd have someone at their house pick them up).  Some days, that valley was just impassible.

The Garden State: How do you get back up the driveway?

Walk through the yard alongside the driveway.  "Park" the car one mile away in the ditch you slid into the night before. Avoid driveway and driving until the spring.
